I think if there's one thing that's certain, it's that Wood wants ODU out of C-USA and into a more regionally sensible conference. Dude's been banging that drum for years

Yes, I don't think CUSA was ever a long term plan, especially without ECU. It was a chance to get the foot in the door to FBS and then figure out how to get into the best conference.

Where and how that is made up....who knows!

RE: What does the AAC Do??
I think everyone around ODU realizes that a regional conference is the best option. We have seen how that can work, and we have seen how much more fan engagement you get from it. The question is how the hell do you do it. If Wood can pull that off, I will forgive him for a ton of (perceived) sins he has made in the past.

Is two years of conference distribution $400k?

No, the distribution includes TV, CFP money and NCAA credits. The estimate I saw is around $5.5 million.

Dennis Dodd has a piece on AAC today: https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...alignment/

He ends it with this:

Quote:Why not cut travel costs with a geographical lineup that would look something like this?

East (10): Appalachian State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, FAU, FIU, Marshall, Navy, Old Dominion, South Florida

South (10): Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Temple, Troy, UAB, Western Kentucky

Southwest (12): Arkansas State, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Texas State, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP, UTSA

I'd take that in a heartbeat.

If USF has issues sharing a conference with FAU/FIU, trade them and Temple.

Copying my reply from the realignment board:

Which way realignment moves could be fascinating. If the Mountain West loses those four, do they add the C-USA Texas teams to backfill? UTEP, UTSA, UNT, and Rice would be a pretty strong quad for them. Then C-USA east would get their more east-coast based conference, and I'm not sure if Marshall would want to leave that for the SBC. If C-USA could somehow keep UAB in this scenario then I think all parties win in some way.

Temple to the East, either F_U to the south or Coastal. Other than that, I like it.

RE: What does the AAC Do??
I hear ya, Trombone. I just cant in mind see how any of those MWC schools looks at what is left of the AAC and says I need to be in that. I could see the MWC inviting old WAC rivals SMU & Rice long before I see them taking on that travel nightmare.

But in your suggestion, it is the last great hope for CUSA to survive with any resumblance of its current members intact.

It also would be the only way my Liberty Flames would have any interest whatsoever in CUSA. But depending on who was invited to the party might be worth exploring.

RE: What does the AAC Do??
If UAB goes to the AAC and the Texas schools go to the MWC, that leaves CUSA with the East Division, La Tech and USM. They might try to join the Belt at that point since suddenly the center of the conference has shifted hard toward the Atlantic. Even then, that's 7, and then add Liberty + JMU. Not sure how much interest App/Coastal/GaSo/GSU have in an East-centric CUSA, especially with the media deal as constructed, but I bet someone bites.

RE: What does the AAC Do??
This does not convince me other than this writer did not do their homework. Hey, I want a million dollars from my boss and I'm going to pursue it. Just because you want it AAC does not mean it will happen. I'm still not convinced big 12 won't go after Memphis and/or Boise state. Do not read too much into this and far as his regional league app is not going away from ga. southern, unless it is a promotion to a much bigger league. Louisiana Tech has already said it does not want ULL or ULM in a conference. South Florida is not going to share a conference with both Florida Atlantic and International. Temple in the south. Wrong. Navy has already said they want Texas, maybe ODU will satisfy them. Ladies and gentlemen, this is far from over and the AAC higher ups are delusional. I'm sorry. Maybe this will all happen and maybe I will get my million bucks.

Just throwing this out there, what if the non aac candidates left out and formed their own conference, let's say Marshall JMU ODU App st Coastal Charlotte Ga State Ga Southern FAU Southern Mississippi La Tech Rice. Like minded schools and gives them a little power. Get rid of dead weight.

Exit fees, no auto bids, no bowl affiliations, no ncaa money, no cfp money. At least for several years from what I understand. They make it hard to make a new conference.

A 32 team conference fighting for 1 bid? No thanks.

CBS Sports:
AAC may target Mountain West. UAB possibly the only eastern program to get an invite.

100%

The more I read about the possibilities of how things shake out, I think Wood is setting us up for a stay in CUSA with the hope that CUSA is poached from the west, thus making CUSA the "new eastern conference".

I feel like he probably already has a pretty good idea of where we stand in terms of AAC, and am doubtful he would be telling the world that he prefers a regional conference if it seemed likely we were headed to an AAC that is not regional at all.

That said, Wood is known for prematurely speaking out of his ass on topics and then doing the exact opposite of what he said he wanted to do.
