UT totally dominating play right now, albeit still scoreless. We can't get the ball out of our zone. UT with a 10-2 advantage in shots.

Texas outshot us 35-10, with 13 corners to our 5. We're pretty lucky to escape with a tie.

Sounds like great defense and goal play. (09-05-2021 09:31 PM)waltgreenberg Wrote: Texas outshot us 35-10, with 13 corners to our 5. We're pretty lucky to escape with a tie.

35 shots, but just 12 shots on goal. That seems like a really low percentage (SOG to total shots). In shots on goal, it was 12 for Texas and 8 for Rice. Is a shot that isn't a shot on goal really a big deal?
Two final decent non-conference matches this week before conference play begins. Houston on Thursday (like Rice, they're 5-0-1) and then SMU next weekend (they're just 1-1, but they play a few more matches before next Sunday).

RE: #19 Rice Soccer vs Texas
If we have pulled even with Texas in soccer, that is a big deal, right? Other than maybe women's volleyball, is there another Rice sport that competes with Texas, or say, wins a head to head 5 out of 10 times?

Yes, a shot that is not a SOG is still a big deal, especially when you allow 35 of them. Sure, some of them were long, wild shots, but many others were relatively close that simply went wide or high (e.g., missed header on a corner). The overwhelming majority of the game was played deep in our zone. That's NOT particularly good defense, and is most certainly not good offense. UT clearly dominated play.
