Rice v Houston pre-game thread
I’ll be there for the home opener, my first in-person football game since 2018.

My score prediction was right on track last week until the 4Q. This week I’ll say the Owls open it up a bit more and win 34-20.

Houston also remains unbeaten at 5-0-1 with wins vs Oklahoma, Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese, and Louisiana Lafayette. A tie with a SFA.

They were one of our losses last season.

I say Rice takes it at home 2-1.

Oh, the other football team.

Early weather reports for Saturday evening are pleasant too (for this time of the year). Really, no rain chances to speak of in Houston until Sunday at the earliest. And while it might be close to 90 near kickoff, it should cool off quickly as the sun goes down and the humidity won't be awful.

Anyone selling a ticket to the game?

Can pay via Venmo/PayPal or cash in person at game. Trying to avoid StubHub fees that are 50% the cost of the ticket.

34-24, OWLS. The defense scores a touchdown in this one.

I love the optimism! This would tie Rice's highest scoring game with Bloomgren as head coach (Rice scored 34 against MTSU in 2020).

In Bloomgren's 31 games at Rice, Rice has scored 30+ points on 5 occasions (31 vs. Prairie View in 2018; 31 @ MTSU in 2019; 30 @UTEP in 2019; 34 vs. MTSU in 2020; 30 @So. Miss in 2020).

As the counter-weight to predicting that Rice will score 30+ points, Rice has scored 10 or fewer points on 6 occasions under Bloomgren (though at least none of these occurred in 2020 or 2021).

Dana was aggressive, going for and converting 2 4th and 1's on the opening drive, and successfully onside kicking after their 1st TD. Tech's offense didn't get on the field until there were 2 minutes left in the first, down 14-0, and they won 38-21. And Tech is picked next-to-last in the Big XII. From what I saw, UH's offense looked pretty anemic, other than Tech mistakes (some lost containment on the QB and 1 busted coverage); lots of check downs and not much running game. UH's D was not impressive, except they dialed up some good pressure on 3rd downs. Bottom line: I was not very impressed with UH when they were winning, and they lost the 2nd half 31-0 (most of which I did not see).

I think I could say the same about our game. The Arkansas coach said it plainly heading into the locker room... As poorly as we've played, we're lucky to be down only 3. They WERE lucky to be down only 3. We should have been up by 14 or at least 10.

It's honestly a tossup to me, but we're at home, the defense is amazing, and I think Wiley will redeem himself. Arkansas had ten returning starters on defense. We should be able to push Houston around just enough to win a close one. A real close one.

I expect a nail-biter. Whether we win or not may come down to another play-call decision at a critical juncture. Will we doggedly insist on "pound the rock" again?

Surprised to see optimism in the predictions. I'll join: Rice 24, Houston 21. Cougs miss a FG as time expires.

Rice needs significantly better QB play than week 1 to win. The run game can have success but the gameplan needs to include a trick up the sleeve to avoid our usual second half letdowns. Our secondary will be tested, hope we're healthy enough.

Please don't tell me you actually want Green to start and get the majority of the snaps again? Seriously?

In Bloomgren's press conference today, he said Green would continue to get a portion of the snaps. Said that "both guys have the ability to lead a college football team."

Being this stubborn or stupid should get you fired. I don’t care if that’s just coach talk to the public but there is no way a HC should believe that after watching the last 4 years of Green. All you have to do is check your W-L record.

It doesn't help Rice's chances when Rozner was wearing a cast on his leg on the plane trip back from Arkansas ....

At worst, the roles of Green and McCaffrey should be reversed for this game, with Luke starting and getting the vast majority of the snaps.

Green needs to start if McCaffrey isn't ready. Bloomgren is trying to hold onto his job. He must feel Green gives him the best chance to win.
