I would love to see Rice run a balanced attack that used 2 QBs on the field at all times who can both run the ball. Talk about an all-new playbook that would be difficult to prepare for! Different guy takes snaps on different plays, both guys can throw and run either after the snap or after receiving a handoff or toss. Even a run-based offense out of this formation would be a nightmare to prepare for. I would pay for (online) admission!

Big for OC!!!! I like it.

Somebody in the Canadian Football League tried this around 1960 or so. If I remember correctly, it was the Toronto Argonauts and one of the QBs was Rice ex Tobin Rote.

What happened to Juma Otoviano? I remember the Old Dominion game where he ran for 2 long touchdown runs! I know he had injury problems, but should be available now. He had the ability to bounce off the line that was clogged, and run to the outside, making those long runs! None of the other Rice rushers seem to have this ability. They just go thru the line, whether it is clogged up or not. Thus, the 2.2 yards per carry! I have not seen him on a single play this year! Why not explore new alternatives and use him again! Such a waste of talent! Use more creativity in this offense!

Agree with OO, I don't really see how this is any bigger of a problem then using just 1 QB, unless both QB's are doing an inordinate amount of blocking. But again, you would be specifically recruiting athletic QB's. Just match the playcalls to the strengths and weaknesses of the 3rd string guy that comes in as a replacement (maybe he throws more or less based on his skills compared to the guy he replaces, etc.).

I'm not really specifically advocating for the system, its just an interesting take on "do something different" that a decent number of folks here seem to like (myself included). I mean, which offense is best: (1) McHargue as QB; (2) Dripuhus as QB; or (3) McHargue and Driphus on the field most plays? I don't really know, but I would love to see what #3 looked like.

You would need two QBs who are able to run pass routes and catch a ball, and do it well. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. Why not just snap the ball directly to a running back or wide receiver?

Clement and Casey with a little Dillard thrown in for good measure? I seem to remember at least one TD catch made by Clement.

Insert the kicker at QB and have him punt the ball to receivers downfield. It's better than what we're doing right now.

That works in rugby, but in American football possession changes when the ball is punted.

Only once the kick crosses the neutral zone. A true madman could ask his QB to punt (or drop kick!) their screen passes.

That sounds like the kind of thing that would work exactly once. It would still be amazing. Like Boswell's Rabona onside against UH.

Ok rub it on fourth down from standard punt formation

RE: Offensive Concerns
I know we're having fun, but it concerns me because this is where some people often go when we talk about 'doing something different'. They go to trick or gadget plays. I can throw more accurately than I can kick... so can Boz.... I just can't throw it nearly as far as I can kick it.

Changing personnel or formations doesn't have to be a gadget. The bunch formation causes a defensive reaction. Overload causes a reaction. Motion causes a reaction. The bunch is basically a massive pick play. The bubble screen is basically a great big pitch out.

I think we could be more of an option team with McCaffery. I know its not Bloom's style, but he has McCaffery, not Oliver Luck.... and he could still 'pound the rock'... just with more shotgun and option and less drop back and 'up the middle'.

Someone needs to tell Bloomgren that Rice might be more successful "pounding the rock" against LB's and safeties outside the tackles than against DT's, DE's, and LB's between the tackles (particularly against P5 and future P5 schools). You can control the clock while doing it as well!

I agree with you 100%, but Bloom's seems too stubborn or stupid to recognize that he needs to adjust his offense to fit his talent. It was terribly frustrating watching us play UH where our offense was so predictable yielding little results. No imagination, no misdirection of any kind. It was the definition of insanity. Bloom reminds me of Les Miles who would not change his offense at LSU not matter what. If he keeps this insanity going he should face the same consequences that Miles faced.

Absolutely right. There's not going to be any changes to the offense to fit our personnel. Just forget about it. Quit talking about it. Mike Bloomgren is on borrowed time. He's done at the end of the season. The man is a complete bonehead. We didn't belong on the same field as UH last Saturday night, and we're in his fourth year.
