RE: Does New Mexico State have a shot?
Should the big 12 go to 14 in 25 or after, one of the two programs will likely be a MWC team. This will then be NMSU best chance for a g5 conference.

As far away as NMSU and UTEP are from the East division... doing travel partners and going to El Paso/Las Cruces for a Thursday/Saturday or Friday/Sunday is far better than going to UTEP and turning around and coming back.
Now, if they added NMSU, UMass, Liberty and Jacksonville State because they lost two members, I could see C-USA splitting in half a little later on. (But I thought they should have split in half already)
Why would an oversized Go5 conference that has been raided down to a better size for a Go5 conference turn around and dig the hole they had just escaped deeper and jump back into it, by not only replacing the two that were raided but actually expanding to 16?

Because they have only one conference they would really prefer to be in, and are not getting any invites to that conference in the foreseeable future.

Though if it is an incrementally better unstable situation, and the current unstable situation will always be there waiting for them if they lose the upgrade in their unstable circumstances, why not?
If it were my choice personally, I'd tell CUSA to kick rocks. A long list of negatives, and very, very few positives to deal with. Indy in football is probably bringing us more money than CUSA could.bring, and unless we fix our program on our own, its doubtful changing conferences to a conference of that level is going to help us move the needle.
That's why. Why not is not a good reason to change conference IMO.
Future scheduling is going to get tougher for NMSU.
Why?
I mean, BYU is leaving the indy ranks, but they don't play anyway. Umass, Uconn, Army, and Liberty aren't going anywhere most likely. They have annual series with UNM and UTEP locked in. Hawaii and a bunch of other MWC teams are still willing to play them OOC.

They don’t play Army either. I don’t think they have UConn on the books. They have a long series with Liberty though. Like you said, BYU going to the Big 12 has no impact on NMSU’s independent scheduling.

I think they have a shot if several eastern C-USA teams break off and form their own conference. NMST could be added to solidify whats left of C-USA (assuming they value any conference membership over indy in football).

This season the only Indy we have is the final game against UMass. The final few weeks of the season are probably the toughest to find willing opponents. Having 7 Mountain West opponents certainly gave this season a nice feel. I wish we had Liberty this year, but we have a good arrangement and numerous fututre dates penciled in.
Personally, I see any talk of SunBelt or CUSA as primarily a discussion of who either conference would add when/if they get raided, rather than anything related to New Mexico State in particular. I don't think the viability of our football scheduling hinges on whether either conference adds us in any way. The topic seems to have just come up as someone's random thought more than as part of any realistic plan.
Even if the 2 conferences successfully swapped members and split into an eastern and western halves, I don't see the western half as an appealing option for NMSU either, personally.

The SEC will not be extending an invitation to NMSU at this time.

As a NMSU grad, I simply am tired of all of the discussion. For the moment, independence works for football. I do not think that even if NMSU joined the SEC, they would see amazing success. So many things are working against them in football. Yes, I know the revenue would enable the school to do more, but I am still skeptical.
I do not mind the WAC as it is currently constituted. I most sports it will be a competitive conference.
