But while you are always recruiting you have the new added benefit of always getting transfers. Sometimes getting a 2nd or 3rd year player with experience and strength is better than getting an 18year old who has to adapt to a completely new environment.
We picked up a #2 QB(possible starter for 3 years) and a #1 DE while losing a #3 RB. So we won this year. Maybe next year we lose. Maybe we win. Or like some other MAC teams we have a zero effect.
Don't tell Toledo we won the recruitment battle, it would crush their delusion.

I thought relying on Jucos and guys with 1 or 2 years of eligibility was a bad thing? It least it has been portrayed that way. This is essentially the same thing.
Someone else mentioned it - I think it might add some depth and reduce the likelihood of being really bad, but if you actually get the really good players (NFL prospects) they will leave thus putting a cap on how good you can get. It's too soon to say how it will all play out.

The very top tier talent some of you are worried about losing is kinda rare. The Jimmy Ward or Kenny G(who transferred here) type guys. Now we will get guys in the nfl via UDFA like Beebe, Steckler and Blake, but there really wouldn’t have been too much of a market for those guys if the portal existed. Beebe couldn’t go play at Clemson. Maybe FIU but why would he do that?
95% of the starters aren’t going anywhere. Maybe Brown could transfer after a big year next year. Is that going to ruin Hammocks team? Let’s worry about top NFL caliber players leaving once we actually get some.

Not RB so much. I think a good QB would be a lot harder to replace. Maybe a good WR too.

That’s the one position I will worry about in regards to the portal. Fortunately NIU hasn’t developed their own QB in about a decade . the last 2 starters were from the portal and there’s a great chance the next one I’ll be too(Lynch).
So it seems anyway that it won’t be a problem for several years. Finger crossed.

Kentucky adding more talent via transfer portal.
Quote:Former Ohio State defensive lineman Darrion Henry-Young transferring to Kentucky. Class of 2020 player had very limited playing time at OSU, but he was a top-200 prospect coming out of high school.
