Not looking promising.
Well, at least the old heads who are dying to get renewed rivalries with USM and UAB can get their wish.

This might happen. It also might not happen.
If I have learned anything about realignment over the years, it's this:
Don't believe anything until it actually happens.

No to the Mountain West. You want your kickoffs at 9 or 10 at night?

It's not happening like that. The Big 12 won't take 2 out of 4 schools that are geographically in the middle of nowhere. They just won't.

No matter how bad it is you don't go to the Mountain West.
West coast football is a graveyard. The program would die.

If we had merged with the MWC last time around, would it have made a difference now?
There was a lot of talk, but no action.
Maybe we would now be in a better position to fend off any defections, and instead grab who we wanted from the B12?

Actually... that wouldn't be bad. At least it won't be 1000 degrees for the Sept. games.

Him and his insider buddies must not have gotten to sit in on this round of talks. This is gonna wind up leaving us in a bad spot.

If the College Football Playoff does expand to 12 teams, BYU would have little incentive to accept an invitation to the Big12. They could still enjoy the freedom of being independent with better scheduling options and get an invite like Notre Dame. If the CFP remains at 4, BYU might be more inclined to jump into that conference in hopes that a conference championship would give them a better chance at an invite.

If the article from the Athletic is accurate, then I would wager Memphis will act quickly in order to salvage basketball, which is their one high major sport
I think they take the UConn route, placing Tiger basketball into the Big East, and then eventually going indy in football, when the AAC declines their offer to remain football-only within the league.
It will keep Penny happy to have a nationally relevant conference schedule, and the elite recruits rolling into the program.

If we get left out now...
We likely are never getting in...
Because it obviously is not based on performance on the field.
But 2025 is a long ways off. Who knows what the next offseason brings.
