CC provides a value that is separate from wins and losses. he's rewarded for that.

I probably could claim the title as Chris Creighton's biggest fan. That said, Sam has a point. Why automatically offer another year of longevity for such a small accomplishment? There simply is no reason to bind the University to the coach for an additional year, if EMU is still thrilled with the job he is doing as I am now, they can do that on their own.

Let's use Harkema as an example. He inherited a horrible program like Creighton, was competitive by year four and then had three VERY good years. Reportedly he was runner-up choice to Barry Alvarez for the Wisconsin HC position after that last good season. Perhaps not getting that job was the impetus, but in any case Jim lost the fire in his belly and went 5-12-1 in the MAC after that. I simply do not think that EMU should binding themselves to any existing coach for more than three years as a result.

Yet we gave Heath a 5 year contract.

Keep in mind that I referenced the term "existing coach". That said, your point is well taken, Heath did not have the chops to deserve a 5 year contract.

Terms of C.C. contracts are in a Detnews article. I assume it is behind a paywall.

What an indictment on Rob Murphy. He was here 10 years and his program had no foundation, Heath is rebuilding from the ground up. Disgusting.

It's how you get to the 5 years you could have done three years with two one year extensions.

Who knows what he gave up for the longer contract? maybe salary or bonus considerations. negotiations are complicated and NONE of us were in the room.

I love the incentive structure, and it's "true CC" that he negotiated incentives for his staff, and has the ability to allocate some of his pay to his coaches. That is pure class!

I did read the article - I'm surprised it is not behind a paywall.

As the parent of a player - How do you think this kind of clause and contract will play with recruits and the families of recruits?

CC comes off very well in recruiting calls/visits, so in my opinion, this will just add to his influence. As a potential recruit/parent of a recruit, knowing that CC has a commitment to the program and that the University has a commitment to him, as well as each having a formally stated commitment to getting to and winning bowl games, would add to the appeal of joining the EMU program.

I've mentioned here before that one of the questions I asked CC in the recruitment process was what his personal commitment to the program actually was (this was just after his initial 5-year contract extension, and at a point when there had been some rumbling that other programs might be interested in him). Alex was enamored with CC as a head coach, and the last thing I wanted was to see Alex commit to EMU and have CC leave. CC's response left me feeling he (and his wife) have a strong personal commitment not only to the program, but to the Ypsilanti region. His sincerity in expressing that addressed any concerns I had about the possibility of him leaving.

To make a long story short, I believe this type of arrangement will have a positive impact on recruits and parents.

What’s not to like? You can win 4-6 games every year and be treated like a savior!

(thats what qualifies for being a savior on this program)

only 2 EMU coaches who coached over 20 games have winning records. lets not act like we're some storied program. he righted the ship and hes getting rewarded for that.

Rebuilds get longer run ways. Dan Campbell got a 6 year deal with the lions. Heath has to rebuild the team - almost from scratch.

Dan you once again have a valid point. That said the Lions, as an extremely profitable NFL team, have the money to eat two years or so from a coach's contract. EMU and many other MAC teams do not. If they did, the tenures of Rob Murphy, Mark Montgomery, Steve Hawkins, Saul Phillips etc... would have been truncated for sure! MAC schools, for the most part, endure the length of an unsuccessful coach's contract sans a booster buyout.

Additionally the transfer portal and its relaxed regulations provide a far shorter timeline with respect to rebuilding a NCAA team. The huge salaries of college coaches was emphasized when NIL rights were granted as well. The free market has determined that a MAC football coach has a minimum wage of $500,000 and I have no problem with that. My issue is with the length and subsequent obligations of contracts these schools are entering into for less than effective performance.
