Exclamation OT: A prospective new D-I football program in Texas, UTRGV
UTRGV (the merger of UT-Brownsville and UT-Pan American) administration is asking their students to vote to increase fees for a football program. The Vaqueros compete in the new-look WAC: Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Chicago State (leaving the conference this school year), Dixie State (soon to be renamed Utah Tech), Grand Canyon University (the only for-profit NCAA D-I), Lamar, New Mexico State (currently FBS independent), Sam Houston, Seattle University, SFA, Tarleton State, and Utah Valley. The WAC announced earlier this year that they would reestablish football at the FCS level in a joint arrangement with the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Go for it. I hope it works out for those schools.

The football arrangement is a one-year deal between the WAC and ASUN. The conferences are awarding individual championships and a joint championship this year. In 2022, the leagues will operate independently in football.

I would expect the WAC to be playing FBS by the end of this decade pending whatever formatting exists of Division I football. There's likely to be a second tier between what is now FBS and FCS as the autonomous schools are likely to split in football (my opinion). The G5 + Some is what we can call it. I do not believe UTRGV would be so set on football if a pathway to FBS (or G5 + Some) was not attainable. The WAC has a 'golden ticket' to be able to move as a conference to FBS due to prior affiliation with the level which is quite a carrot.
