RE: Much Respect and Continued Success to Maxx Crosby
Dear KPJ,
Thanks for the article about Maxx, and his struggle with alcohol. I hope he has it beaten, but only time will tell.

Thanks for sharing article on Maxx! More important than football is living a healthy lifestyle and winning in life. I hope Maxx develops a positive coping method to battle his anxiety. One thing for sure, he’s a great football player!! Let’s go Crosby!!!

RE: Much Respect and Continued Success to Maxx Crosby
Paywalled article for the athletic about Maxx's sobriety

https://theathletic.com/2806112/2021/09/...-and-back/

This was interesting:
Crosby was, in fact, sober his entire last season at Eastern Michigan .. after getting in a drunk-driving accident leaving a party that spring.

“I wrecked my car and got arrested,” Crosby said. “I knew I was going to face some kind of suspension. Coach (Chris) Creighton told me it was going to be a two-game suspension, but that second game was against Purdue … that’s a huge game. At Eastern Michigan, if you’re playing a Big Ten team, that’s a monstrous game. I was like, I cannot miss that game. And I was waiting for a couple of weeks to see what he was going to do. It was a scary time.”

Creighton made Crosby a deal.

Crosby had to stay sober the entire season, get drug-tested and breathalyzed frequently, do a lot of community service and the suspension would only last the first game. If Crosby drank after any game or failed a test, he would be suspended again immediately.

Crosby was planning to enter the NFL Draft early after that junior season, so it was a no-brainer. And a white knuckler.

“He challenged me,” Crosby said. “And I stayed sober and was able to get to the draft. Without that challenge, I don’t know if I would be here today. Looking back on it, obviously, I went to the pros and had my struggles again, but a year and a half later, our relationship is so strong. (Creighton) always reaches out to me.”

This is pure Creighton. A FB parent told me right after C.C. held his first meeting with the team that discipline would be the rule of the day. Basically it is a 3-strike system.

Won't repeat it but strike 1 can be a failed drug test - suspended one game. P.S. I hope marijuana is not included as that drug.

Bet it is although I don't know. Employers can still fire you for having pot in a drug test. But yes the rest is pure CC which why I celebrate his contract extension. CC is a good coach but he is an even better human being.

GREAT POST Dan!

I'm with '79, we have a coach that does it right.

Agree 100%!

A lot of guys question why I am so committed to Creighton while I trashed Murphy. That is an extremely valid concern as one could argue that Murphy, from a W-L standpoint was more effective.

Chris suspended the two most talented players (Roback and Crosby) of his EMU career when they were fresh into their junior years. Nigel Kilby was extremely promising but he disappeared and now we know why.

Rob, by contrast, was forced to suspend his two most talented players (Lee and JT4) in their senior year, an act that was clearly too little - too late, as they were clearly detached from the program.

He got flattened on the long TD run. They ran right at him, it was his responsibility to meet Williams in the hole and he got destroyed. Keeping it real.

Maybe they got him on that play but he has been living in the Baltimore backfield. His spin moves are phenomenal.

Agree with that. Overall nice game. Huge Raiders fan here. What a game! Also team captain at age 24? You can't help but be impressed wth Maxx. Unbelievable what he's accomplished already.

Thanks Bob for that acknowledgement.

The ESPN programming today lauded his performance and Marcus Spears in fact called him the "best player" on the field. He was that good!

Hoping for the best for him having had my own drinking problems (2 fifth a day) stopped 3rd of January 1981. Me and he don’t see eye to eye on a few things and I stopped talking to him.

Maxx will never be a great run defender. He is what he is, a pass rusher. Quick as a gazelle is an asset for a pass rusher, but not for run stuffer.

id rather have an End who is good rushing the passer than stuffing the run

Ideally, you'd like to be able to prevent long runs while also being great rushing the QB off the edge. What's the difference between a 30 yard run and a 30 yard pass?
