You can't remember the UCLA, Cal and Stanford football championships because they probably never happened. the other 4 were in the 50s and 60s.

UCLA won the national championship in 1954.

I was born in Arkansas and grew up as a Razorbacks fan. The football championship was well before my time, but i was 16 when they won the NCAA tourney. Loved every minute of that.

I'm older than dirt and I don't remember Arkansas either winning or sharing a football NC - At least not AP or Coaches Polls. Same with Cal and Stanford.

Since when does the NCAA award titles in football?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_NCAA_...all_season

Quote:The 1964 season ended with controversy as to whether Alabama or Arkansas should be recognized as the national champion:

-Alabama finished the regular season at 10–0 and was ranked No. 1 in the final AP and UPI Coaches Polls. The AP and UPI did not conduct post-bowl game polling at that time. Accordingly, and despite a loss in the 1965 Orange Bowl to No. 5 Texas, Alabama remained the national champion in the AP and UPI polls.

-Arkansas, ranked No. 2 in the AP and UPI polls, defeated No. 7 Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl, had also defeated common opponent Texas in Austin, and finished as the only undefeated and untied major college team. In polling conducted after the bowl games, a five-man committee of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) selected Arkansas as the winner of the Grantland Rice Trophy as the top college football team in the country. Arkansas received four of five first-place votes, with Texas receiving the fifth vote. Alabama did not receive a single vote for first, second, or third place.[2] Arkansas is also recognized as the 1964 national champion by Billingsley Report, College Football Researchers Association, Helms Athletic Foundation, National Championship Foundation, Poling System, Sagarin, and Sagarin (ELO-Chess).[3]

I didn't know the specifics growing up. All I remember constantly hearing is that they won a national championship. And that Frank Broyles was the coach and Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson were teammates on that team.

Thought they won one in the 50s, but when I looked it up, the website didn't show them as champ. I guess it only used AP. UCLA won the coaches.

Several groups recognized unbeaten Arkansas in 1964 with Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson, Ken Hatfield & Co. after they won the Cotton Bowl game as #2 and #1 Alabama & pre-Broadway Joe lost to Texas, whose only loss was to Arkansas, in the Orange. Coaches and AP were both done before the bowls that year.

What if you factor in the NIT when it was considered to be more prestigious than the NCAA tourney. I gather that was at least up to the mid-50s.

Brigham Young - 1951 NIT / 1984 football
Colorado - 1940 NIT / 1990 football

If we start stretching definitions, that might let TCU in:

2017 - NIT championship
1935; 1938 - Football

We can't let that happen...

Can't say that I'm a fan of retroactively declaring somebody a national champion years after the fact. As far as I'm concerned, all nattys before the AP started polling in 1936 are bogus. For that matter, maybe nattys declared based on regular season only without considering bowl game results are bogus as well.

But while some consider these quirks a flaw in college football, I prefer to think of them as part of its charm. When it comes to sports, controversy is a good thing IMO.

Well bowls were in many cases viewed as an exhibition, so before and after count for 1970 and earlier. Most consider Alabama the 1964 champion even though they lost the bowl to Texas who only lost to unbeaten Arkansas.

And this is the reason we had the BCS, why we have the 4 team playoff now, and why we will have an expanded playoff in the not to distant future.
