I would put money down on a bet that CFP expansion is now dead. Everyone was acting under the assumption that it was a "done deal," but the SEC's grab has now derailed it.

4 default "Power" Conferences, 4 slots in the CFP. Nice and easy fit.

I don't buy it. Everyone knows the four team playoff is stale. The 12 slot tournament drives interest, ESPN gets half a dozen more 3 million eyeball games, the TV contract means everyone gets more money.

They'll find a way. The only question is how long will it be delayed.

the expansion is rumored to be worth a billion more than the current system...
the overwhelming majority of p5 still support and 100% of g5 are for it

the playoff wasnt expected for 3-4 years... i can almost guarantee the same timeline exists.. but instead of instant approval and 3 year wait... its approved in 2 years

the only thing at risk is the details...

The West Virginia President is safe doing this. He knows that if there are 4 playoff spots, 12 playoff spots or 395 playoff spots WVU is not going to be good enough to get one of them.

Too much money left out there. They will take it to bid and split contract to prevent ESPN to control it all. 12 slots with now really four power conferences means 10 slots to be divided by the Big4. Bigger money is going to be made by those four with an expanded playoff.

He must know that the ACC aren’t interested in WVU. That’s not exactly the way to make friends.

He thinks it needs to be nearly unanimous...

I'm so confused. Was the original 4-team format unanimous? Seems like all him voting no would do is kick the can until the contract expires. After that, I'd need you'd just need a majority.

Also, if Sankey (knowing that they were planning on bagging TX/OU) signed off on the format, it means that at least the SEC is still down with it.

How is the Big 12 going to feel when the SEC gets three schools in a four team playoff? They've been close before, with three schools in the Top 5. A day is coming where it's plausible for this to happen.

I think Cincy showed last year that the "gulf" between the SEC and top of the G5 isn't as wide as the powers that be like to make it seem.
