from Navy coach Paul Johnson
"To me, I think there's a point where you face reality," Johnson said. "For us to play Notre Dame and Boston College and N.C. State every year, how are you going to have a successful season if you schedule yourself six losses before you start? ... You don't schedule six games where you're 29-point underdogs. If you do that and you play a 12-game schedule and you split the other six games, then your record becomes 3-9."

I agree strongly with his basic idea that getting the wins in the bag and the program built have to come first and then scheduling the marquee opponents falls after that.

Your point is a valid one.
However, I feel that the schedule can be very important in recuriting the kind of players to win games and have successful seasons. I don't believe you should shoot yourself in the foot by scheduling 5-6 opponents that you have little chance of defeating each year, but I believe you do need 2-3 quality ones. :)

Tulane fans need to develop more of an attitude that the conference games matter most and non-conference games go after the conference games.
Rick Dickson has followed an approach of having "special event" games like this weekend and like Texas and like the baseball game in the Superdome but I really wonder how many fans come for those games and not for the UAB's, Cincinnati's, etc.

Good point, one thing that concerns me about Dickson is that he is inclined to venture into the "gimmick" aspects rather than stay the the course on the straight and narrow.
That baseball featuring Tulane/LSU in the Superdome last year was, in my opinion, a total disaster. The Louisiana Superdome is NOT a venue for baseball. The feedback I have received afterward was 100% AGAINST.

Completely agree.
I'm sure they've been told to do everything possible to maximize revenue but I can't get excited about playing LSU in the Dome.
