Georgia Tech is playing in ______ in 2036
Georgia Tech is in an unique situation with the next round of realignment. It could realistically be in 3 different conferences. Unlike UNC, or UVA, Georgia Tech likely does not need a partner to jump to another conference.

What are everyone thoughts on where Georgia Tech lands?

Here are my thoughts likeliest to least likely:
1. B1G
2. weakened ACC
3. strengthened ACC
4. SEC
5. Independent

A G8 ACC. There is only room for one Premier League team in Georgia and it will be in Athens.

Given your "likeliest" landing spot, Tech would very much need partners to get an invitation. Partners, as in "more than one" to bridge the gap to a northern conference.

I think the answer could very well be the Big 10.

I think Clemson and Florida St are going to dart for the SEC, which will open the ACC up to further defections.

Agree that GT will remain in the ACC. It could be strengthened somewhat, if for example, a school with solid athletics such as WVU, was added. ND giving a full commitment to ACC fb would be a major boost. That happening though, is very doubtful at this time period.

I don't see GT going to the B1G without meaningful Southern partners. It's already very very difficult to imagine the B1G getting the state of GA to be contiguous. The pairings on offer to go North are UNC and UVA ... the most northern geographically and culturally of the ACC's southern flank. That's a very tough sell. If the alternative is to be in an imploding ACC though ... to the B1G they'd go.

I don't know how things are going to turn out so I'll just group these:

Plausible Outcome, GT fans would be happy:
- The Swofford-less ACC suddenly becomes able to think beyond basketball and gets its collective crap together. Quietly the leadership broadly speaking in the ACC has been upgraded over the last 5-7 years.

- The ACC's southern flank merges into the SEC to create the premiere athletic conference in all revenue sports. The old SEC would push the old ACC to get better athletically. The old ACC would push the old SEC to get better academically.

- The ACC merges into the B1G to create the "SEC foil" conference which is a peer athletically and superior powerhouse academically to the SEC.

Plausible Outcome, GT fans would not be happy:
- Clemson and Florida State in particular are taken to any other conference, leaving GT isolated and at a steep revenue disadvantage to programs in literally every immediate direction and playing a severely degraded schedule.

- GT goes to the B1G with UNC and UVA only as part of a demographic and market push by the B1G in exchange for a massive (eventual) payday. This leaves GT playing a largely uninteresting home schedule for the rest of time, though it would have plenty of cash.

I don't really see any other option as being realistic at this time. GT is quietly more attractive than most people realize. By 2036 GT could have one of the largest post graduate enrollments in the nation. As the tech sector explodes GT is practically alone in the night in offering world class elite online education at an affordable price. Though they may not be concentrated in Atlanta, the number of GT alumni is exploding. GT has the right President who is behind the athletic mission:

And it has the right AD who has already closed on his first 9 figure fundraising project. GT is doing the best in the Capital One Cup that is has since Homer Rice was around. The casual fan is probably paying attention to football which, due to massive roster overhaul, is a frustratingly lagging indicator. But Todd Stansbury, current GT AD, GT LB under Bill Curry, and GT assistant in the athletic department while Homer Rice as AD, said himself in an interview on the ACCN last week that it's starting to feel like 1988 1989 again around North Avenue. The success on field is there. The branding and cultural and media and apparel sea change has happened. And the competition has taken note:

I believe GT will be fine, they are a very valuable addition to either the B1G or SEC and I believe either conference would offer them if the ACC implodes.

I think it would be fun to have Georgia Tech back in the SEC. Your athletic monies would increase, and I personally think your attendance would boom with more regional rivals. It wouldn't just be about the traveling fans either, even though numerous fans would enjoy games in Atlanta outside of the SEC title game. I can see more casual fans in Atlanta get fired up for GT as they face squads with more national cachet.

It would be an interesting political move, but the SEC could have the motivation.

Part of that happening would be GT and Bama burying the hatchet. I think they tried to schedule each other for the first time since Bear/Dodd's blow up a few years back when GT was riding high under the option, but the game never happened.

I use to say if you give him the players he'll beat anybody (and did) with the option. I don't know if that is the same after they neutered the blocking rules to try to eliminate explosive plays out of the option from a rule book basis.

They knew they couldn't just block ALL blocking below the waste or RBs in for blitz protection would get lit up every game across the country. So now you can only block below the waste within (3?) yards of the line of scrimmage. Because we know how well and reliably and consistently ineligible receiver downfield is called.... Anyway, that eliminates a lot of the second tier blocking within the spread option. It's somewhat normal to send an OL plunging into the midfield to try to block a LB. The buy guy doesn't have to pancake the LB, just impede him. That generates a lot of diving blocks below waste at the second level as big guys do their best to block smaller faster defenders in space. But if it all comes together that's how 3 yards and a cloud of dust becomes directly to the endzone and a cloud of dust. Second tier blocking within the spread option has been effectively made illegal in college football. I'm not interested enough to compile and stats, but I suspect if you tracked the service academies they all started taking on more L's per year on average and less points/TDs/explosive plays per game on average when that rule change went through. I think that rule change is no small part of Paul Johnson's retirement.
