I wonder if we can "tit-for-tat" and bring Mike Mickens back and toss an assistant DC role at him to replace Eliano?

As far as I've seen, interviews haven't even taken place yet...any heat on him outside of that? I know Heacock and Ash were both listed as candidates too (both guys with OSU connections to Freeman).

Do we think Eliano is a good coach or someone who walked into 3 years of elite secondary talent?

He’s a good recruiter.

Very good...and the only guy on the staff with Texas ties, which will be huge in a year.

1/3 of the assistant coaching positions are vacant right now. If Texas ties are very important, then I'm confident that Fick will prioritize Texas ties when figuring out who to hire for those positions.

RE: 2021 CFB Coaching Carousel
So what do we have to fill at the moment?

OC - Gino highly likely
TE/QB (depending upon what Gino does) - I'd imagine we're taking a look at the EMU TE coach given the multitude of connections and his overall quality as both a coach and recruiter
ST - Wouldn't be shocked if Lambert moved into that role should we not go get someone on the outside

Rumored interest in our coaches
WR - Brown has been listed at VT boards and he is from the area...would imagine Binns would walk into that role unless Paige wanted to move (he was a WR in college and has coached WRs as well as RBs)
DB - Tougher one...if Eliano leaves, there isn't really a clear move.

I often wonder if having to play HR department and backfill a staff every January is more of a bummer to CLF than facilities and pay status.

We need to jack up the assistants’ salary pool.

It doesn't matter how much you pay them. There is always going to be turnover. As someone commented earlier, it seems like a yearly occurrence with Nick Saban. He's lost 39 assistants over his tenure.

Here is an article highlighting that when OSU and Alabama played in 2014, only 2 out of 18 assistants between the two teams were still there when they played 7 years later in 2021.

Quote:Of Alabama’s 10 current assistants, none have been around longer than three years.

Ohio State has been in-between. Five of the 10 OSU assistants have more than three seasons in Columbus.

Losing assistants is a good thing. It means you are doing something right.

Turnover happens but we shouldn’t be losing guys to lateral positions at places like Va Tech. Heck we shouldn’t be losing our ST coach to be the ST coach at ND. Perhaps I’m being a bit pollyanic.

I think that's excusable when you consider that he tripled his salary and ND is ND (yes, I know...). Hell, even Mike Brown wouldn't be inconceivable given his own personal connections to western Virginia. Overall though, your thesis is sound...with where we are now and where we want to continue to be, we should only be losing guys to promotions moving forward outside of the weird outliers.

That’s my point. He moved ...if he has a family he moved his family...for a lateral position with a pay increase. We need to be more competitive with our assistant pool if we are going to run with the big dogs.

I'm sure we'll get there. But for now, we're still in the AAC dealing with AAC-level resources. We need those B12 paychecks to start coming in.

If reports on Houston's B12 contract are accurate and are equal to the deal we can expect, we will not see "B12 Paychecks" until 2025...even if we join in 2023.

Assistant coaches are gypsies. Pick 6 assistants names that have been around for 15 or 20 years and look them up on Wiki. Most will have at least 10 stops.

Their kids have it as rough as military kids, in changing schools and no long term friends. Buy a house? Better rent!

Now these days they are getting paid damn well if they get to bigger programs.

The reads exactly like what TCU and WVU had...they were given percentage steps until the next contract executed when they were added to the Big 12, and I'm reading that Houston will not get a FULL share of revenue until 2025, but they're certainly going to make some money (I mean, they'll have to distribute Texas and Oklahoma's shares somehow if they leave and the value of the contract remains static, and if those two stay through the 2024-25 season, there will almost certainly be a pro-rata addendum for the added inventory. Rest assured, we will at least be make slightly more than we would in the AAC in those two years.
