Perhaps we are now seeing why there is interest in expanding the number of playoff teams. A 12 team playoff would make winning the SEC unnecessary.

Just your friendly reminder that Brent Venables is from the Great Plains, played in the Big 8, and coached at Oklahoma for 13 years...

Can't wait to see LSU regret not hiring the clear choice an hour away from campus in 3 years.

Maybe they already evaluated Napier and decided they didn't like him.

We could have used that sort of analysis before hiring the "obvious choice" from "the local region" in John Brannen.

I doubt he has to interview for any NCAA job anymore. It’d be more like a recruiting visit.

Agreed. There are no interviews at the level of programs looking at Fick. They either offer you or they don't

Go to CBS Sports online. There's like 10 names being thrown around. Fick is going to be a named candidate with any top P5 job. What else is new?

There is Bishop McGuinness High School in OK City so that might work. They have a football team.

I think LSU is still the one to worry about. Not Oklahoma.

**** Tonight’s side note:
Listening to ESPNU radio on the drive home from Cincinnati to Columbus and Leaf and Eisen are all bitching about Riley going to USC. Leaf says “There isn’t a successful elite program in a big city. Outside of maybe Cincinnati”

Then he says “elite football programs are found in rural towns that wouldn’t exist without the college like Athens and Norman and Columbus”

That is freaking awesome.

The funny thing is, Clevelanders would agree wholeheartedly.

The only coaching carousel move I'm worried about is Ryan Day to the NFL.

Fans at the University of Miami might disagree with that premise as they gaze at their national championship banners. The Hurricanes are not an "elite program" at this moment, but we'll take the compliment that UC is.

While there is something to that romanticized ideal that the big state university in a small rural town is better positioned for gridiron success than urban schools, it's not so much the case anymore. People in Columbus are quick to claim they live in the largest city in Ohio (not largest metro) and OSU has pretty much dominated the B10 for the past decade or so. The archetype may be changing if UC becomes the poster child for elite football in a large, city-located university.

RE: 2021 CFB Coaching Carousel
In other news on the coaching carousel, I read yesterday that two-win Indiana has fired its offensive coordinator. Here's the best part: Coach Tom Allen took a pay cut to buy out that contract for his O.C.

When we visited their stadium this fall we found the facility pretty bland and even somewhat antiquated. One wonders how with B10 money, both facilities and coaching moves aren't better funded. Even more so with that P5 paycheck each year, why is Indiana scrounging for a six figure sum to buy out an O.C.?

My guess is Tom Allen is now on a short leash. Right now, IU appears to have a top 30 recruiting class but this latest move wouldn't seem to bode well for his long term success. It's going to be an interesting re-match in Nippert next fall if the Hoosiers are in the early stages of rebuilding their offense.

That pay cut was him singing for his supper. Another year like this and he’s toast.

Just a little IU perspective:

Winning years since 2000 were 2007 7-6 2019 8-5 2020 6-2

Won 9 games twice 1967 9-2 1945 9-0-1
Won 8 in 1993 1988 1987 1979

No coach has left with a winning record since 1947

Yeah...no team benefitted more from Covid than Indiana last year. They got Penn State in a game without 8 starters due to pre-season opt-outs, moved straight onto Rutgers, then beat a Michigan and Michigan State team each with a zero at QB, then lost to OSU and came back and beat a Wisconsin team with a 3rd stringer at QB.
