Yeah, the "Napier to Florida" talk has really taken off... right down to the speculation that UF fired Mullen when they did to get a jump on Napier specifically.

The "Fickell to Florida" talk, is almost in courtesy territory.

I like how most of these openings, Fick's name pops up initially as a candidate but then quickly fades into the background behind other names. I wonder if these schools make the initial call to Fick's agent and they tell them...."He's staying put".

But the pessimist in me says his agent could also be telling them...."He's going to USC ". (or wherever) I tend to believe it's the former.

Any agent worth his salt would never tell prospective schools that. Look, it's not unlike any industry - outside interest drives your value. There are few incentives in this game for loyalty. It's why the Frank Beamer's are so rare. Even if Fickell as 100% committed to Cincinnati it's his agent's job to gauge interest and see what kind of money Fickell could demand on the market. Then it's his job to come back and see what UC can provide.

LSU and Florida having a potential fight over Napier already illustrates the predicament the playoff picture throws into all of this. The big boys have incentives to get it done wayy before the playoffs. Napier, Lane, and Cristobal could all be the new faces of LSU, Florida, and USC by the end of the week.

Excellent story on both the recruit and our coach.

I'm reading a lot more into this but it makes me believe that Cunningham/Pinto have already engaged in a dialogue with Fickell that a contract upgrade is coming once again at season's end--perhaps one that anticipates the new Big XII revenue stream in year two of that offering.

I'm feeling really good today after reading this. My faith is renewed.

For anybody on the fence about buying or renewing their season tickets, if CLF is still here next year when the dust settles, we will owe it to the man to Let It Fly.

100% graduation rate seems pretty wild given the number of people on a football team. Anyone know how that stacks up nationally?

We have normally been one of the top schools in APR for our football team, dating back to the mid-00's. If I recall, back in our last foray on the mountaintop, we were #1 for three straight years when comparing on-field success combined with classroom success. From personal experience, the Huggins stuff late in his tenure with Jihad and a few others really made the AD re-focus on academic/student services and it has reaped dividends.

Amazing that whatever changes they made have stuck more than 15 years later and are still effective.

TCU hired Sonny Dykes. That’s a solid C minus hire plus they get to pay SMU a decent chunk in buyout $$. Would be like having X hire John Brannen away from UC last March. Lol

Yeah, I'm guessing there aren't a ton of tears being shed in the SMU fan base. The guy can't beat good teams. SMU can do better.

James Franklin just signed a 10 year deal to remain at Penn State. He'll make at least $7 million per year.

Beat me to it...it would appear USC basically has one candidate they'll send the full force of their resources at now...

Could you imagine the recruiting cred of headlines read Luke Fickell turns down USC to stay at UC?

Franklin should consider himself lucky. He was a rising star at the beginning of the season. 4 losses (soon to be 5) later, he almost missed his window.

Living in Pennsylvania, I can tell you the Penn State fans were beginning to tire of the constant speculation that Franklin was looking to jump to other jobs. Think of how Bearcat fans were starting to tire of Mick's interviewing while not showing progress in the NCAA.

Now Franklin has committed to a long term deal at PSU, but he still has to show progress on the field.

I would guess everyone on here would expect Fickell to leave for OSU and ND if offered...what other schools in the Midwest would you expect him to leave for? Not a stretch to see LF making $5M a year here with nice incentives in the B12 and raises for all his staff, plus a fan base that LOVES him. I was worried with MSU and would be worried with PSU, but hopefully this new deal keeps Franklin there for the foreseeable future. Just keep winning 04-cheers

Tucker is apparently officially staying at Mich St. @ $95 for 10 years. I wonder how that contract is structured but it's staggering on its face.

It didn't get nearly as much attention but Hugh Freeze's new deal at Liberty (note that they are part of the EXPANSION to Conference USA) averaging over $4M/year is probably just as eye-opening to me.

Quote:The university announced the new contract Wednesday without disclosing financial terms. Sources told ESPN that Freeze's total financial package would average more than $4 million annually over the length of the contract.

According to sources, Freeze's new deal will be worth more than or at least comparable to what five SEC coaches are making.

Gotta figure there's a lot more crazy to come with all the big money openings yet to be filled....

update: Saw a report that Franklin's deal with Penn St. is $85M over 10 years.

See that’s where it gets weird. Is O$U good because of Ryan Day or is Ryan Day good because of O$U?

I was curious too. He was like the clear heir apparent. Is he like boy wonder or something? Because people are also talking about the NFL.

It's both. Yes, Ryan Day was handed the keys to a Ferrari in terms of a college football powerhouse. However, he is one of the brightest offensive minds in football, especially when it comes to developing quarterbacks. He also has maintained and, in some aspects, even elevated the recruiting. One other thing I'd say separates him from both Urban and Tressel is that he is not blindly loyal to a fault. I feel like if Urban were still the coach and the defense was struggling, he wouldn't have yanked play calling duties from Coombs like Day did. I was skeptical when they turned the program over to a first-time head coach, but he is the real deal. OSU is even better off now than they were under Urban.

I think the NFL talk stems from his ability to develop young quarterbacks, as well as his short stint in the NFL as quarterbacks coach for the 49ers and Eagles. He only spent two years in the NFL, but due to that, he is perceived as less of a risk as some other college coaches who would be considered for NFL head coaching jobs.
Thanks so much Robert
Very insightful

Exactly
They have limits (at least some owners do), But wealthy alumni that are crazy fans and places like LSU don’t have limits.

I saw on Reddit that his contract is rumored to be in the $7 million per year range. If that is true, that’s just another indication that coaching salaries are out of control.

I wish they would impose some sort of restrictions on mid-season contacts and hiring. Dykes is under contract to SMU...the whole business is unseemly.

There are "dead periods" in recruiting. I wish there were "dead periods" in hiring.
TY Jerry!
Well said. And just change the signing period so the schools don’t feel they have to poach someone by early December, just in time for recruiting.

My guess is A LOT of that $95M is incentive laden and backloaded. I just can't see giving a man who is 12 points from 6-5 this season, and who was 4 games under .500 last year that much in flat salary.
