Show me the (TV) money

Thought it was deserving of its own thread.

The MAC actually got a very favorable TV deal a number of years ago which was extended.

I didn't realize that the media rights were that high ($2M per school per the chart). ESPN has the rights to set game times, etc.

For a school like EMU which doesn't derive big sums from attendance revenues, these are big, important bucks.

This comment is speculative: Not much revenue growth possibilities with ESPN. ESPN is full with their many football conferences. SEC is moving completely to ESPN in a few years.

I am curious about how football attendance has fared under CC. I believe part of his incentives may be based on attendance but I cant remember. I think fan interest really rose during our last bowl. Then covid hit. It will be interesting to see attendance this year and how it fares with a favorable home schedule.

I vaguely remember Murphy had such a provision in his contract which was so ridiculous to be laughably unattainable.

There are two sets of books, er, I mean attendance figures, one is turnstile count and the other can be whatever, including those "Pepsi fans."

Best way to judge EMU attendance is have someone stand in either the S.E. or N.E end zones and take a good photo of the west stands. It the crowd looks good, then it is good. Who cares what the announced attendance is.

RE: Show me the (TV) money
One other thought about ESPN TV, money, attendance, recruiting, etc.

The following statements are all true:

1). Attendance suffers because of the proliferation of television and webcasting games. Given the option of driving 25+ miles and watching at home, at home wins a lot.

2). As a function of #1 above, gate revenues are lower than could be without all of the games being televised.

3). The ESPN monies are more than sufficient to cover loss of game attendance revenues. Remember a lot of attendance is not 'paid attendance.' Students, the band, etc. etc. are not paid attendance. So 1k or 2K students produce zero gate dollars.

4). It is absolutely imperative that a team/conference have their games on some network TV or webcasting. Teams not on ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc. are not considered relevant by the general public, recruits, etc. This is especially true in FCS and D-II. When is the last time Ferris State, Wayne State had any television outside of the state of MI? Exposure builds interest. Having a game on TV once a season does little to foster fan interest. Has St. Francis (Pa) eve r had a ESPN/2/U telecast?

One of the other leaders in my sons Cub Scout pack worked for the food services company that is contracted to manage EMUs dorm food, athletic events food, etc. Apparently a lot of universities contract this company. Anyway, they transferred him to EMU to head those operations in 2016- Chris Creighton's 3rd season. He used to say that the revenue from football concessions was great, while that for basketball was a wash.

That gives some indication of attendance in my opinion. Though, I think football fans might eat and drink more in general but especially given how long you have to be at the game.
