RE: OT: Crypto Currency
For me personally the underlying block chain technology is what draws me to crypto and i haven't invested in any particular coin base per say since these are dime a dozen and anyone who can employ a capable team and have server farm can get one going. But i agree with few folks who already said the best time to invest in one of these coins if you trust them is in the early phases of adaption. I know a few folks who bought BC for cents and now they are sitting on treasure although a volatile one.

I would encourage you to stop thinking of it as a digital currency (although that’s what Bitcoin is), and start looking in to the actual blockchain technology. Ford, BMW, Warren Buffett, etc... they wouldn’t be investing a LOT of money in to this blockchain technology if it didn’t at least have potential.

Crypto only holds a value based on someone else believing crypto has value.

It holds no tangible value aside from dark web dwellers. Its uber risky. No thank you.

The dollar may continue to devalue, however it at least has a national standard. OG crypto will ultimately fail because it has no unifying nation standard. It only has value as an entity because it cannot become replicated. Its going to continue losing value because it is no longer accurately true to say it is an untraceable commodity.

Since we got off the gold standard in the 1970's---that would be no different from the dollar. Today, the dollar is a fiat currency. It is not backed by any commodity like gold. The dollar has value because our government says it does---but its just paper---and we devalue it daily by printing more and more of it. There may be good arguments against the long term future of cryptocurrency---but the "it has no real value" is a fairly ineffective argument when we live in an economy based on a fiat currency.

If I were going to argue why its future use is limited---my argument would be it lacks stability as a repository for wealth. You cant run a bussiness where you accept cyrpto currency as payment because the currency might lose 20% of its value in a week. A useful currency has to be more stable than that. Right now---cryto currency is more speculation than investing. I own some---but its high risk money that Im basically speculating/gambling with.

^^^. What he said! Good post.

The attractiveness of cryptocurrency has always been the fact that's it's NOT traceable by any government, foreign or domestic. But I've always struggled with where the actual value comes from? If you go back to Day 1, WHO initially decided cryptocurrency --Bitcoin or Ethereum, etc...--- had value at all, and how much? I guess it's really no different than who decided --way back in the day-- that gold, or silver, or any of the other metals have value.

IMO, trading the cryptocurrencies is not an "investment", rather it's speculation/gambling. It's not like buying a stock and investing in a company that owns assets, future cashflows, products & services, etc... It's more akin to trading like the metals, but without the long history that metals have. And it should be traded very similarly to how the metals are traded. Carefully.

Pretty interesting to see where it might impacts our day to day lives.

I recommend a podcast called exponential view on hbr. He recently had the ceo of visa on and discussed their view of crypto.

Awesome. I’m pretty big on ADA too. It’s on a major bull run right now at least until Sept 12th so get in now if you want to make some money. XRP is another. It will really explode mid September or so IF the court stuff goes their way, so they are more of a gamble than ADA.

Yes, VISA and a lot of the other traditional whales are starting to get involved.

If you want a cheap one that I think will really explode in a few years, check out VeChain. Ford and BMW are both involved with it right now. BMW is going to use the VeChain technology to prevent odometer manipulation among other things.

There’s another we can’t buy in the US that I know of but all the major car manufacturers are working together on it to basically keep track of car ownership. No more paper title to worry about losing etc. VID by the MOBI group.

I’m with you. I can’t wait to see how much this technology changes our lives over the next decade.
Nice! I'm on the 757CIO forum and we had a handful of colleges and university deans or admins come to talk to us. They wanted to know was what they need to add or remove from curriculums regarding tech talent in our region. Block chain came up and one college was already providing a qr code to graduates with their diploma. So they can include it on resumes for HR depts to quickly do credential validation.

It’s definitely something that needs added to curriculum. The entire industry is going to EXPLODE. First few colleges who get in on this will make a lot of money now and in the future as they will have wealthy alumni lol

If you are in it for the long haul you can invest in the coins that have been around a bit. The entire market will only grow until 2025-2030. Less than 10% of the population currently owns crypto. So as more people start investing the over all value will obviously go up.

Invest in blockchains that serve an actual purpose as opposed to just being a currency. Also look at current circulation and max supply of coins. That will give a good indication as well in terms of how much the value can go up. If there are 100 million coins in supply with a max supply of 10 billion then I’m not buying that coin for long term as there’s still a lot of devaluation to come. If max supply is 1 billion then it won’t be as diluted in the future if that makes sense.

The reason BTC is so valuable is the scarcity. There will only be 21 million total coins with the final one not coming until sometime around 2140.

The attractiveness of cryptocurrency has always been the fact that's it's NOT traceable by any government, foreign or domestic. But I've always struggled with where the actual value comes from? Respectfully, you are completely wrong. This is basically buying the stock of a technology. It’s like buying Amazon, Yahoo, etc back in 1990s before they exploded. Obviously not all of them are the next Amazon so that’s where the risk is at... but they most definitely have assets... the assets are the technology.

BTC was created after the financial crash of 2008/09 and was created as a digital currency. So you are correct in that regard. It took a while for people to realize the most valuable part of BTC was the block chain technology and that is what has created this incredible opportunity as they start finding more ways to use this technology to change the world.

They are now using it to maintain, transfer, share, etc medical records. Safe, secure, and 100% patient owned. No more paper or digital records, it will all be on the block chain technology. The sky is the limit with this technology.

I’m hesitant on ETH right now as I think ADA is going to take a lot of their business starting mid Sept... Faster, more secure, and much cheaper gas.

That is the plan. I want to get involved with investing in services/products that rely on blockchain for underlying frameworks rather than strictly as a way of exchanging goods/money. I am not really worried about dilution when taking the products/services route with a good product/service comes a huge consumer base esp with early adaption it can be had for real cheap. I get what you are saying though because the risk factor goes down with less dilution.

Which exchange are you using to purchase VGX? I’ve been researching it and I’m really impressed. It has a max supply of 222.3 million coins but the best part.. they are all already in circulation so there will be no more dilution. VGX just bought coinify which will help it expand in to over 150 countries. I think VGX is ready to really take off. Wish I had known about them a month ago lol.

Ponzi scheme (/ˈpɒnzi/, Italian: [ˈpontsi]) is a form of fraud that lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors with funds from more recent investors.[1] The scheme leads victims to believe that profits are coming from legitimate business activity (e.g., product sales or successful investments), and they remain unaware that other investors are the source of funds. A Ponzi scheme can maintain the illusion of a sustainable business as long as new investors contribute new funds, and as long as most of the investors do not demand full repayment and still believe in the non-existent assets they are purported to own.

If it fits a definition perfectly ...

Early investors may make millions. Others will be burnt.

Wrong. While there is boom and bust crypto out there....just like stocks there is also sustainable companies building technology on the blockchain that is changing the world. It's a 2 trillion $ industry....more than just early investors are making money. It will have more regulation and coins will come and go but it's not going away. Crypto that has utility and scarcity will lead the way.

It’s amazing to me that people refuse to even look in to it. Oh well. They will all be using crypto by 2030 so it won’t matter whether they invest or not.

What are tomorrow's Lotto numbers? Nobody should be that confident, especially with something as volatile as what we are discussing here. It's insane that people think this technology is the gospel truth.

People buying into AOL in the 90s thought the same thing. John DeLorean thought he was on the cusp of greatness.

I see a lot of hubris in this thread.

RE: OT: Crypto Currency
The other element to this is utility, as you said... There is simply no form of cryptocurrency that is easy to buy sell and trade with.

Holding long term ACH, Bat Token and Mana. Yes crypto is volatile as hell but I find it entertaining. Pocketed over 20k from Doge when that hit ATH of around .70 because I bought first cheap back in January. To each his own just don’t invest what you are not willing to lose.
