Here’s my theory of realignment: There’s a clear line in the AAC that ESPN made (UC, UCF/USF, MEM, HOU) and a clear line for expansion that makes sense for the B12:
1. BYU-their previous aversions will be overlooked because the L8 need them
2-3. Cincy/UCF- Cincy no real weaknesses, UCF performance and potential
4-6. HOU, MEM, USF- could take any of these. All have real pluses. All have real minuses. HOU-another TX school to compete w. MEM-academics, USF-do they see them as a valuable travel partner or a lesser version of UCF?
7. SMU-only here because I can’t see TCU allowing another team in the same city especially if the reports of pushback on HOU are true. I think there’s more to that than Fertitta. They belong on the line above otherwise, but would you want a conf of 5 TX teams if you already had 3? Or a conf member in your same city?
If you take only 4 and the other 3 join with Boise, SDSU, and Co. St., etc they are still nipping at your heels. If you take the top 6, game over
What is the "minus" with regard to Memphis academics?
Of the top 10 candidates to join, Memphis ranks 9th in most academic records (Shanghai, USNWR, research dollars). The only one worse is Boise
We are assumed to reach R1 status this December. I don't know what that will do to our USWR score, but it is somewhat prestigious to be a Carnegie R1 school.

I think it certainly makes a difference. How many other AAC schools are R1
