I'm not sure what distinguishes the "Wild Owl" from a designed QB run, haha.
I always took it to be someone playing QB whose primary position was not QB. Depending on the year, Turner worked with the RB or TE groups in practice. As far as I know, Johnson still is a QB even if his strength is running the football.
That said, you are correct he did score twice on QB runs against UTEP.

My assumption has always been that the idea of the Wild Owl (or any other team's similar package) is to put in a RB that posed a passing threat or a QB who could power run. We've never utilized it that way, as we've virtually NEVER thrown the ball from that formation. So, Excited 18 is right -- just a designed QB run...
Not true, at least not when the Wild Owl was first deployed. Luke Turner threw out of that package on several occassion, and passed for a couple TDs with it.

RE: Fall depth chart for football
Jeremy Eddington I think it was, had several TD's out of it as well. It's worked at all levels as a wrinkle. I'm all for a package called Wild Owl but Jovoni doesn't need it, he just needs to play QB and the call can be a creative QB run. That's not happening much in Bloomgren's "west coast offense." Was hoping the offense would be more QB-run or RPO oriented with McCafrey and Tuiasosopo coming in, which would fit Jovoni as well, but not looking like it's going to be the case.

And you can tell that how exactly?

I wouldn't expect Green to know the offense so well (per reports) nor take first team reps if a shift to a dual-threat QB friendly scheme was taking place. Haven't seen reports on RPO being used, hope we're saving some for the Hogs.

From all account, Green is sharing first team reps with McCaffrey, which is logical for the first several weeks of camp given McCaffrey is new to the system.

You know what they say: when you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks.
I'd imagine the same is true for coaches.

Leach is finished. His coaching career has run its course. He's a west coast guy at a public school, and he can't win in a weak PAC 12. Not good.

In the spirit of the topic: Leach is not coming to Rice. He is not one for major urban settings. Lubbock, Pullman, and Starkville weren't accidents. He's been pretty open about preferring rural communities. I don't see how we could convince him to come to one of the toughest jobs in football for something in range of $1MM - $1.5MM per year smack dab in the 4th largest city in the country. If he's looking for somewhere to continue coaching and has to take a step down to the G5, I'd expect him to go to a school like Utah State or East Carolina. Maybe our academics appeal to him (He's got a JD and is big on graduating players), but it's obviously not a sticking point for him given his CV, and just about everything else you can think of to describe the Rice job is probably undesirable to him.
For some context about how likely it is for him to be fired: He's been at Mississippi State for only one year. He left Washington State (not fired) with a 55-47 record. Out of Wazzu coaches with more than 20 games at the helm, he is 4th in overall win rate. He is 2nd best in school history if you trim the list to either coaches with 80 total games or to coaches with 20 games since WWII. How in the hell is he likely to be fired after one COVID year at Mississippi State? His system isn't even close to in place. Whoever made this list either has an axe tor grind or is throwing darts at a board with Leach at #5.

I completely forgot that he already left Washington State. He must have done fine there, but I really don't know. If he has only been at MSU for a year, then he gets at least two more to turn it around. Agree that he would never accept a job at a place like Rice, even though there would be very little pressure on him.
