FloSports News
https://caasports.com/news/2021/8/12/foo...rship.aspx

CAA has expanded their partnership with Flo. Not much meat in this press release, but based on the volleyball and soccer schedules I have seen, it looks like EVERYTHING is going behind the FLO paywall, with no more CAA.TV freebies

In exchange, if you have a .edu email from a CAA school you can get Flo for $6.99/month

This appears to be an expansion, not an extension, so from what i can tell there is still only 2 years left on the contract

Joey D and FLO executives on the left. All CAA schools on the right. Yippee.

This is another reason why uncw needs to leave the caa. The caa i think will extend contract with flo. Most people i know do not know flo sports exist unless uncw fan.

UNCWsports has this as a feature highlight on their page

Sadly I think our admin is a big part of the problem in supporting Flosports

This is terrible news for all CAA fans. Time to look for a new home!!!!! The ASUN might be interested. I don't think the SoCon would be a good fit for UNCW from a travel standpoint.

Please note, to get the $6.99 month rate your listed email needs to end with uncw.edu

You are able to change your listed emai to whatever you would like it to be

I like what the ASUN is building. They look to be upgrading the quality of their basketball with additions of Liberty and Eastern Kentucky. Their baseball is already decent.... I think CofC and UNCW would definitely be on their radar.

I don’t want to hear complaints. Since FLO has been around ruining all of our lives in the CAA, a number of folks talking about how it’s bad for the CAA always the ones paying monthly chunks to catch certain segments of the season.

I’ve said from the start doing that mess encourages this BS to stick around. Those of you that participated in that only have yourselves to blame.

From Eastern Kentucky's press release re: joining the Atlantic Sun:

"The ASUN boasts a membership of institutions that share visionary leadership, bold ambition and creative innovation. As a nimble adaptive conference, unafraid to blaze a national pathway for better service to our student-athletes, teams, and institutions"

Visionary leadership? Bold ambition? Creative innovation?

Seen much of that in the CAA lately?

Extension of the 4 years, you may have a point.

Buying 1 month at a discounted rate does nothing to encourage continuance

You can tell by the lowering of the price , things haven't been going swimmingly for Ole Flo

RE: FloSports News
Nothing would stop the CAA from extending or renewing the FloSports deal right now. This "extended coverage" seems to be an attempt by Flo to up the ante when it's time to renew. BUT, there hasn't been a renewal yet, so let's not assume anything.

I imagine every single CAA Athletic Driector has been made aware that fans and donors are not happy with the Flo Sports setup, but we are in a contract. I will be surprised if it is renewed in the face of overwhelming criticism. But, we are going to put on a happy face since we will be in negotiations with whatever our alternative is. Pretty weak position to negotiate from if you publicly display unhappiness with your current situation.

Yup, this 100%

Go look at the Twitter responses this announcement got on the CAA feed

If the goal is ESPN after next season, the CAA needs to make it seem like Flo is a legit alternative to try and get the best deal possible from ESPN at the negotiating table.

Surely Athletic Directors and Coaches can't be happy with the CAA Flo Sports deal. It harms their ability to recruit competitively with other mid-majors. No upside to Flo for anyone.

Why shouldn't we be happy with such a deal. Afterall, who needs national exposure when it comes to recruiting?

Do you ever wonder whether the quality of the CAA media deal reflects the quality of the CAA and the quality of its rivalries? It could just be that the viewership market for CAA sports events is decidedly finite and unlikely to grow. If the commissioner and the ADs are stuck with a product that they can't move/sell, it really shouldn't be a surprise that diehard fans are left with something like FLO Sports. Persuading businesses to buy ad time for Elon - Hofstra, Towson - Northeastern, UNCW - Delaware games and so on is probably a tall order.

It's the chicken and the egg here. SoCon has a deal with ESPN. No money coming in, but national exposure on a well known network. What are the big draws in the SoCon? The CAA schools, as a whole, are bigger and better known than the SoCon schools. The exposure could create more interest from players, which increases the chance for teams to make a breakthrough in the NCAA tournament, and then increase overall fan interest.

82 i disagree attendance for mens basketball for caa was 2,414 average which is increase from last few years. The schools in the north are not that well known in my opinion.

The exposure could create more interest from players, which increases the chance for teams to make a breakthrough in the NCAA tournament, and then increase overall fan interest.

It's unclear that institutional name recognition translates into greater fan interest for athletic contests be they in-person, on broadcast media or OTT. If W&M is one of the programs responsible for pulling basketball attendance up to 2400 per game, that's a pretty big "tell" as to how interested people are in CAA contests at schools with much higher enrollment and in cities with higher population density.

Since the exodus, the CAA has been operating and will continue to operate in a tough space. The geography is clunky. The football rivalries are different than the basketball rivalries. It's hard to name any signature CAA OOC wins over the past few years. The best players will have a high likelihood of entering the transfer portal meaning teams, and fans, have to start over with a new cast every year. In short, the CAA product is not easy to sell for someone seeking to monetize media coverage.

I'm not an apologist for CAA leadership, but at this point these people are stuck with the rivalries and fan interest they have. The SOCON might be in a better place on this front, institutional name recognition notwithstanding.
