MAC Coaching Contract
Hi All,

ESPN just posted an article on Kent State's Sean Lewis' coaching contract extension. His original contract was set to expire in '22 and he was extended to '25. No details provided yet.

It got me thinking......CC's contract, to my knowledge, expires at end of '22 which is the same as Lewis'. I pray we extend CC and would assume the extension comes this season. Recruiting would be VERY difficult going into the '22 season without an extended contract.

Any thoughts?

RE: MAC Coaching Contract
I think CC's current contract is less than 575k per year plus incentives. Not sure what the buyout provisions are. He is certainly worth more.

Sure I personally would like to extend him but what will be the cost of the new contract? Who would assist in paying him something more competitive.

If this team finishes less than .500 overall this year and doesn't go bowling it will be cold water on a possible contract extension. My guess is this may come up after this season. I agree with some of the posters on this board that at some point in time more progress in the football program as defined by winning the MAC West going to a better bowl and a conference championship would be great. Lets recall Murphy was a winning coach and then stagnated in his last two years.

On the other hand if this team surpasses expectations this year and wins 8 games, the MAC West then CC could move on to a bigger job and paycheck.

I'd love to see CC stay at EMU but if he isn't successful in 21 and 22 we and he may move on and if he is he may move on.

Certainly would look to past and current assistants under CC to keep this culture going.

"In his recently signed extension, obtained by The News through a Freedom of Information Act request, Creighton will earn $450,000 in 2017, the second-to-last year of his original contract, then earn an additional $10,000 each year, topping out at $500,000 in 2022."

All really good points. Specifically, you bring up something very interesting.....Weatherbee is in an interesting spot. If CC guides us to 8 wins and a bowl win, then CC has leverage for a larger contract. If that's the case he might be picked off too. It might be worth trying to extend him now which is what I think motivated Kent State to extend Lewis.

I also agree that specifically this year has to be the year for him to win and win big for the extension. Really no excuses the way the schedule lines up.

RE: MAC Coaching Contract
I see CC is a major input into fund raising for future football facility improvements. I doubt the,SPAC would, have been built without him. Something to factor in.

500k is peanuts

That's about #113 according to USA Today's. Doesn't include private Universities.

For better or worse CC has been the face of EMU athletics for several years now. I can't think of any recent EMU coach that is so widely respected by his peers his players and by EMU students and,
fans.

Agreed. I think they will have to pony up and pay him. Particularly, if we win a bowl game this yr

I also think he makes more than 500k. I think his bonuses include Team G.P.A., home crowds above 15k, car allowance, 7 wins, radio appearances, etc. Still lower on the scale but could be more like 550-560k

Yes and no. One thing folks need to remember that the cost of living in Ypsilanti is moderate. The price of housing is 50% of say in the D.C. suburbs. A small fraction of places like the West Coast, mid-Atlantic, etc. etc.

If I had a salary (or celery as a friend pronounces it) of 500K I'd be on Easy Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

CC never comes across as like a pro athlete who signs a big contract and buys a 100K car and house with 10 bedroom and 8 baths (and jacuzzi).

When Alex was being recruited a few years back, I had the chance to talk to CC about his personal commitment to the program. This was shortly after he had signed his extension. I was left with the impression that he is motivated by where he believes this program is going and a genuine appreciation of EMU and the Ypsilanti area. He didn't say so in so many words, but I got the feeling that the financial aspects were secondary to his feelings for the team and his players.

That's not to say that I don't think the right opportunity with the right salary wouldn't woo him away, but at the time, he did not seem to me to be the kind of coach who was only interested in his next opportunity, and who saw this position merely as a stepping stone.

And I agree that the U should look at extending his contract ASAP, and show him the respect he has earned by paying him well in acknowledgement of what he has done, and what he has the potential to do for this team down the road.

I have been told by a few sources several times that CC and his family really like the greater Ann Arbor Ypsi metro area. I don't think CC would move based on $$$ alone but because he enjoys a challenge. He has slowly but successfully moved up the coaching ladder. The only question is how big of a coach does he want to be and where at? Success at EMU doesn't look like success at Notre Dame. And different coaches define success in different ways. That's my way of saying CC may want to stay at EMU if things can be worked out. I agree he is not a mercenary.

I love hearing CC likes the area, the school and the team but I am always suspicious of the next program looking for someone to turn them around like a Uconn or Temple. Let's hope Weatherbee steps up to the table and offers him the extension soon to keep the buyout higher and wolves at bay. CC deserves it for what he has done and the types of players he has gotten here.

500k is peanuts

The good thing about new or extended contracts is the tethering, school to coach and coach to school, which occurs.

The cost to cancel the contract, either side, is high.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of "79's comments! Creighton is and has been a gem.

I really dislike comparing his situation to that of Murphy. Rob had a better W-L record, was a superior recruiter and was not a horrible coach. Murph, however, never adopted EMU as his home, after all he was "recruiting to Afghanistan". His performance was respectable, but after 10 years, I think a change served both the coach and the University. Rob is talented, he will end up just fine.

CC by contrast, has invested himself into the University as a marketer of the program as well as deeply associating himself with EMU and Ypsilanti. Rob and Chris had different approaches, I much prefer that of CC and am willing to compensate him for that.

As far as a contract extension, I would be cautionary as to the dollar amount and length. Dan makes a great point, Chris would be a fool to turn down a Power 5 offer, Buffalo extended and made Nate Oats a 7 figure coach only to see their coach leave for Alabama for a much bigger 7 figures. CMU, by contrast, extended clueless Keno and fortunately had donors ready to open their wallets and negate that mistake.

I would suggest a modest pay bump as Creighton has not won or truly competed for a MAC championship and the money is truly not an issue. EMU is NOT going to compete with Vanderbilt, Kansas St, Nebraska etc...

No need for a beyond 2 year additional commitment either. I know it allegedly helps in recruiting but I will always remember what Lance Leopold said when he was coaching football at Buffalo. "When we were losing, competitors advised recruits that I would be fired and when we started winning, they insisted that I was heading off to a bigger program". The MAC is what it is.

According to USA Today, CC's contract is the 9th in the MAC, with only Akron, Ball State, and Kent behind him. And with the word of the Kent extension but no details, CC could quite possibly have moved to 10th. The question that needs to be asked is, "Is CC the 9th or 10th best coach in the MAC?" If you answer no, then where does he fit in? If you think he is top 5, then his contract should exceed $620k. If you think he deserves to be compensated in the range of Western or Central, you're looking at the $800k range.

I'd give him a 3-4 year bump with a large buy out. Bet on him getting poached by a bigger program - but i like CC a lot and i think you have to give him a pass for last season.
