IKR? How on earth does an NFL team allow themselves to get such a lousy deal in the first place? Obviously, the Vikes learned from that and held them hostage later with Bham as leverage.

Since Legion Field is dead to UAB and Bama, there is nothing to see here. Each school now has a stadium to suit its needs for many years and can charge whatever the traffic will bear (no pun intended)..

The NFL owners in Buffalo, NY and Minn. liked to use B'ham as a shill to get local voters to give them the new stadium deals they wanted (at tax payers expense). It worked like a charm for them. There was never any chance of an NFL team moving to a stadium where over 5,000 prime location seats could not be sold at greater than face value or as season tickets except to SC holders. That was the legal protection afforded those who had bought them years ago. Once Bama set up the TIDE PRIDE program in the mid80s,to charge a premium for seats, they were gone as well. Every home conference game at Legion Field potentially cost Bama about $6 million in lost premiums.

Don't forget Broncos in the sixities. Denver had a referendum that barely passed to build Mile High. If it had failed we were the alternative the Broncos were after.

Also Sept 22. 1969 Super Bowl Jets vs Boston Patriots in a REGULAR SEASON home game at Legion drew less than 30,000 after Bear whined about the effect on college ball. Boston desperately wanted out but the lack of support convinced them to go ahead and build a stadium in Foxboro.

The Chicago White Sox used the under-construction "if you build it, they will come" domed stadium in St. Pete, FL back in the '80s to put pressure on the Illinois legislature for a replacement for Comiskey Park. There were already t-shirts and hats for the St. Petersburg White Sox. Funding for the new stadium in Chicago was passed shortly before midnight at the deadline.

I got it exactly where you're thinking of, but the stadium was built way before the movie came out. However, the quote reflects the philosophy employed at the time.

I actually don't know a movie with that quote, that's why I asked (and yes, I'm just poking for fun)

Pretty sure that line does not occur in Field of Dreams 03-drunk
In all fairness, the last time I visited the Field of Dreams site (which I’ve done several times), they were selling shirts with the misquote. When I asked the salesperson what the shirt was quoting, she was super confused

yes the exact quote is "if you build it HE will come" but that line doesnt work when talking about the stadium.

I would consider it a movie reference instead of a quote. Like “Play it again Sam”, “what we have here is a failure to communicate”, or “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore”. None are accurate quotes but they get the point across
