One huge BS rumor is that USF kept out UCF for years. That was the lie of Brett the Mustache.
Truth is, the C7 blocked ANY football addition for years. It would have given the football teams more votes than the Bball teams. No, USF wasnt in love with adding a rival school, but we didnt have anywhere near the power to block. The C7 did.
USF did not have that power unto themselves, but my understanding is that USF always joined the C8 to oppose UCF, and Judy was cheerleader-in-chief for Villanova FB moving up rather than accepting ESPN’s proposal. It seems more obvious this was the case when TCU got added without UCF.
Of course we initially preferred expansion to not be in our back yard. We get criticized for "killing the Big East" when we didnt. The C7 could block football expansion without a single Football vote. Expansion took a 75% vote to happen. 7 catholic schools voted as a block.
We did push for TCU over UCF. Comparing the records at the time, it made sense AND it opened up Texas for recruiting. I dont think those are bad reasons.
As far as Villanova, I can tell you with 100% that Genshaft was not the cheerleader for that. That was the C7. We added a football school and they wanted to make certain we (football schools) never got more power than them. So they thought that moving up one of their own would help keep a balance of power.
Genshaft was willing to go along for a bit but opposed not acting with other candidates.
People try to blame USF all the time based off ONE report by Brett McMurphy, who USF has had multiple problems with him when he was our local reporter. He lied and people ate it up. He rode many of his lies all the way into an ESPN job and then those lies cost him his ESPN job.
At no time did USF ever have the power to block UCF and the main reason the Catholic 7 left had nothing to do with Tulane or anyone else. It had to do with 12 football votes and only 7 basketball.... and Notre Dame wanted to leave but that was true the second that Pitt and CUse left. Thats when they started looking.
I grow so tired of the UCF lie about all of that. The facts and voting system of the Big East doesnt support the lie. Hate us for whatever else people (not necessarily you... You seem to be a cool UCF guy) want but that is one lie that needs to die. It was never true.
