NCAA Convention
Who didn't long ago see this eventually coming? There has been speculation about a new top division, at least in football. There has even been speculation, too, about the new super conferences after the dust settles , especially the SEC, leaving the NCAA (again, at least in football). At any rate, I expect some changes to recognize the increasing reality of the "haves" versus all the rest.

RE: NCAA Convention
Especially now with the NIL expanding. If BYU can get somebody to fund 36 scholarships for walk-on athletes, how long until the SEC schools are back to hoarding all the talent with their recruiting classes going from 25 to say 25 + 10 to 15 more “walking on” to then being fully funded by a deep pocket booster? If widely exploited, the trickle down effect to us could be huge.

That was my first thought when I read this. I'd be pretty much okay with a split of the minor league/psuedo college programs doing their own thing and letting the rest of us have true college programs with student-athletes.

Polish Hammer, the only downside with big programs hoarding talent would be that those who don't get playing time would go into the transfer portal and most would end up at lesser "big time" programs and mid-majors anyway, eventually. Things are getting strange.

So if everyone can hide extra players, players that would originally sign with us, get bored and transfer out then we can get them with some eligibility? And that’s the only downside? Ok…

The one thing that MAC schools will always be able to sell to recruits (and transfers) is playing time. I imagine the MACs talent level would stay roughly the same. We would lose out on depth and we'd see more of our starters being transfers and fewer 4 year guys.

Polish Hammer, I meant the "downside" for the super-powers. They can get and hoard all the talent they want, but the transfer portal will hit them the same as everyone else.
I was glancing at the paper this morning and saw that in one pre-season poll the "Big 5" were all ranked IN the top 5. In no particular order - Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia. It is so boring for someone like me who began watching college football in the 1950s (not that there was much on TV) to see the same old names over and over. Well, the fans of one-time super powers like Nebraska, Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Southern Cal, Miami, Michigan, etc. now know how it feels to be basically an afterthought, even if they are in the Top 25 or even the bottom of the Top Ten.

RE: NCAA Convention
True, and I’m at that point now where the elite programs just don’t move the needle for me. I’ve pointed out numerous times about the haves and have nots. How schools like say Penn State just want to get on the level of Ohio State but are getting pushed further away…well, we’re miles apart from Penn State yet we’re all FBS and supposedly playing by the same rules yet feel like the Pittsburgh Pirates going against the NY Yankees in their free spending prime. Before you could take the ~120 FBS schools and cut them into 2 divisions with a fairer competition. Now you could take the top 5-10 off the top and separate them, then cut the rest into several sub conferences. The finances will never align and the poor will remain poor, but the NCAA could do small things to level out other factors but will never as they wish to cater to the richest programs.

Well, they have to cater to the richest programs because that's where their cash comes from and, if they level the field, those programs will take their ball and go home.
Football now resembles European soccer where only a few teams can compete in their national premier leagues. Four teams (Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State) have had 20 of the 28 appearances in the playoffs in the last 7 years with the 8 other spots taken up from 7 different teams.
The rest of the sports seem to be heading that way too. Who ever heard of golfer transferring? Now that is happening every year. It's ridiculous.

Well eventually the second tier and downward will get sick of it and start building the numbers for a coup. Those same programs wouldn’t give a rats a$$ about the G5 but now the divide inside P5 has become so huge. If you get some schools (from outside the elite and down to the G5) combine their efforts they could counter the catering to of the small handful of elite programs.

This is why rooting for a MAC team is more enjoyable, IMO, than rooting for a p5 team. In the p5 you either have little to no chance of winning, or you're one of the top teams and there are only 2 or 3 games on your schedule that will actually matter. I follow OSU but honestly find most of their games extremely boring.
If you can accept that a MAC championship and a random bowl win is your ceiling, rooting for a MAC team is much more entertaining. A good coaching hire and a couple good recruiting classes then you're in contention. The game isn't rigged for or against you.

You mean, Indiana isn’t just about to make a run at a football championship? You’re right. You have the Globetrotters (5-10 teams) and the Washington Generals (the other 55 teams of the P5 conferences). Very exciting stuff for sure.

It’s all related to TV/ESPN app etc. money. Golf Channel started pushing college golf and the merry go round started. ESPN pushed women’s gymnastics and the athletes saw the 10,000 or so sized crowds in the SEC and elsewhere and they started transferring. The MAC and other G5 programs can do nothing to stop it. Almost every sport has 10-15 schools that can win a championship and another 10-15 that might have a lucky year now and then. The lucky ones will no longer be G5 schools (like Kent basketball in 2002, Kent gymnastics in 2011, and Kent baseball, softball, golf when ever that was). If Kilgore came to Kent he would never have lasted until his junior year and won a national championship for us. Ohio St, Penn St. or Iowa would have gotten that one.

In a way it’s always been like that except occasionally we would sneak a good year in. That’s what’s not going to happen anymore. No college World Series, 5th place finish in golf, 11th place finish in gymnastics or national champion like Kilgore. Those teams will lose players before it can happen.

The transfer rule is just nw for football and basketball. In other sports, players have been able to transfer without sitting out for years.

True but they didn’t do it very often. Now they do it all the time.
