Obviously missing basketball skews this massively by all other assessments and metrics, kansas is the most valuable brand still in the big 12

Sitting at #62 of 73 on this list. I would put us squarely at #73 in a list consisting of these 73 schools as an expansion candidate.

Which underscores just how devastating the loss of Texas and OU was to the Big 12 brand.

RE: Where does Your school rank ?
Interesting stuff, my school was about where it always is in these types of rankings(25).

The rankings make me feel like Oklahoma state and Texas Tech have a place in the P4. I've always felt that but this article highlights it.

Though it doesn's skew it as much for the status quo, where basketball is worth maybe 20% of conference media value, as it would for a breakaway of football and basketball, where basketball would be worth 40% of conference media value.

I cannot see how this isn't factoring in basketball when it talks about fans and social media following. If there was no factor, Kansas is dead last on this list....... yep, number 73

RE: Where does Your school rank ?
All of these 73 schools should have a conf home - I think the play here is to grab all the rest into a 5th Big American conference

If that conf were 16 teams, there are room for the 57 remaining schools to be in 4 14-16 team conferences -

An 8 team playoff with 5 conf champs and 3 at large bids seems fair and would generate plenty of interest.

I'm not sure that it misses basketball because in value comparisons between NC State and UNC, State is usually ranked with more value than UNC. Once basketball is lumped back in, that switches. It may be a function of attempting to measure the value of schools that are located in the same market, when competing against one another. It would be interesting to see silvers raw data.

Okay I found the flaw, Silver was reusing some of that data that a couple of clowns put together and claimed it was an actual survey when it was just a skewable poll. That why you ended up with some schools barely showing up as they did not bother to game the poll.

https://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/0...ent-chaos/

This is based on what was known as CommonCensus and found to be wildley skewed if not outright fake data. This data set that Silver used found that Rutgers was the most popular college football team in New York and that NC State was 12th in the ACC. This data set was based on allowing anyone to vote as often as they liked (the reason ECU was ranked higher than NC State or UNC in eastern NC). Silver still used the corrupt data adjusting it for reported earnings so internal transfers and outside funding was not teased out. Piss poor social science.

RE: Where does Your school rank ?
I'm thinking of devising a different rating system, one based solely on objective, measurable criteria. Factors to be evaluated might include: 1) the number of pigeons that roost in an on-campus stadium*, 2) the inverse of the shortist possible distance, measured in inches, from any point on campus to the nearest college bar**, 3) the square footage of a school's largest football locker-room, 4) average humidity, 5) the number of on-campus Starbucks***, and 6) the number of students or alumnae who were crowned as Miss America.

* Sorry, but Pitt, Temple, USF, and perhaps a few others accrue no points in this category.

** No offense, but we could argue all day as to whether this unfairly penalizes BYU.

*** See **, above.

Well then Syracuse is number one hands down having had the most beautiful Miss America of the last 50 years.

Maybe, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But the rating system is based on quantity, not quality (can't we all just stipulate that the MA title implies quality?). Syracuse has had only one? Cincy can rightfully claim two Miss Americas, and Ole Miss had two from the same sorority (Chi Omega, IIRC).

Nice info. Seeing what you said makes it even worse IMO. When I found that Medium article, I felt using 10-year old data as a part of their formula was a big reach. For example Memphis was 80th in Silver's study, but in 2009 and 2010 we were a combined 3-21 (1-15 in conference) sitting at the bottom of CUSA. If current, more accurate data were used I would believe Memphis is higher than 80th bumping us up in Medium's ranking.

That was an interesting exercise. Some teams, Memphis included, went higher than I would have expected. Thanks for the link.

I think Texas is #1, as they were IIRC in the recent WSJ valuation.

If FSU gets things rolling again, 21 is too low.
