A Realignment That (Won’t Happen) Could Save CFB Tradition
Because money, politics, and probably ESPN, this is a move that won't happen, but would present the the best opportunity (in my opinion) to make the maximum amount of money for conferences while preserving rivalries. Only way I see this happening is if the NCAA or the CFP had a commissioner for the sport like the NFL and took control of college football (at this point, why not Greg Sankey). With the NCAA looking at potentially restructuring divisions in the NCAA, this would probably be the best solution for a top tier (90 teams).

American Athletic Conference
Boston College
Cincinnati
Louisville
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
Syracuse
South Florida
Temple
West Virginia
UCF

Atlantic Coast Conference
Clemson
Duke
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Maryland
Miami (FL)
North Carolina
NC State
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

Big Ten Conference
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Penn St.
Purdue
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Northwestern
Wisconsin

Big 12 Conference
Arkansas
Colorado
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St.
Texas
Texas A&M

Mountain West Conference
Boise St.
BYU
Colorado St.
Fresno St.
Hawaii (Football)/Gonzaga
Nevada
San Diego St.
UNLV
Utah St.
Wyoming

Pacific-11 Conference
Arizona
Arizona State
California
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Utah
Washington
Washington State

Southeastern Conference
Alabama
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
LSU
Mississippi State
Ole Miss
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

Southwest Conference
Baylor
Houston
Memphis
Rice
SMU
TCU
Texas Tech
Tulane
Tulsa
UAB

Independents
Air Force
Army
UCONN (could be in AAC, but left independent for now)
Navy
Notre Dame

Everyone gets 3-4 non-conference games, 8 conference games (2-6 Rivalries Protected), and a conference champions week with the top 2 teams playing for a championship. The others teams could play a team not played during the regular season using conference standings to help determine those matchups. The 5 independents would also be matched up with the 5 11-team conferences to help with scheduling.

- 12 Team CFP with 6 Autobids for top 6 champs
- 1st round and quarterfinals on campus
- Semis played at NY6 Bowls
- Neutral Site for Championship

Glad it won't happen for my Liberty Flames as well as the entire Sun Belt, MAC, most of CUSA and assorted Indies who I presume would be left to wander down to FCS. In other words six of the final Top 25 from last year wouldn't make the cut. Great plan.

They would be apart of a middle tier with the top conferences of FCS.

I heavily considered including a modified Sun Belt that I would be open to include.

Appalachian St.
Arkansas St.
East Carolina
Georgia Southern
Georgia St.
Louisiana
Louisiana Tech
Marshall
Southern Miss
Troy

Liberty and Coastal could be included or swapped out as well

If you want to save tradition you're going to have to kick out a lot of schools and cap the conferences at 10. We didn't even have conference championship games until 1992 when the SEC added South Carolina and Arkansas to their conference and created divisions.

The split between 1-A and 1-AA happened in 1978 with 12 remaining conferences in 1-A. Of those 12, you saw 2 pseudo mergers (Big West / WAC into what is today the MWC; Big 8 and SWC into what is today the Big 12), and 3 conferences transition to 1-AA (Ivy League, Missouri Valley, and SoCon).

The first team to sell out of their geographic region for a conference next door that makes more money was Penn State. PSU's 7 most played games are not against Big Ten opponents. They really shouldn't be in the Big Ten and are a big reason why the Big East never took off.

The biggest difference between historical conferences and current conferences is that just about every region now has a B-tier conference. The density in the Southeast in particular which has added Conference USA and the Sun Belt to the region in the past generation or two. None of those programs has much historical relevance to college football nor have they even been in FBS particularly long.

Penn State should be in the AAC, not the B1G.

Move ND to the Big 10
Move Penn State to the ACC
Move FSU to the SEC
Move Colorado to the Pac 12

Now you are done.
