NBA Draft tonight
So I wonder if Rice will promote the (likely) 1st round selection of Trey Murphy or not? Certainly, all the media will say he's from Virginia, but he obviously was at Rice for two years and still connects with the program a bit. It will be interesting to see if he becomes Rice's 'highest ever' draft pick or not. Ricky Pierce went 18th in the 1st round in the 1982 NBA Draft, so that's the standard.

It does seem likely that he will become the highest NBA draft pick ever to attend Rice out of high school (Pierce was a JUCO transfer). In this day and age of P5 conferences, I think that's pretty significant news.

I'd be shocked if Rice doesn't at least send out a congratulatory tweet. Pera already did and Murphy responded to a post from a couple of former Rice students earlier today. To me he's officially a Virginia draft pick who is simultaneously appreciative of Rice.

But behind the scenes, that's an entirely different thing. Virginia will obviously use him to recruit (not that they need help), as will the Rice coaches. But I guarantee you the same will be true of Mark Linebaugh and Chris Kreider, both of whom coached him, and Omar Mance, who helped recruit him. So that's coaches from 5 schools who will almost certainly be trying to convince recruits that it was their talent identification or coaching that made Murphy into who he is today.

RE: NBA Draft tonight
ESPN's Mock draft has Murphy going to the Wizards at #15.

Jonathan Givony/ESPN Wrote:The 6-foot-9 Murphy's stock has been skyrocketing in the pre-draft process as teams have gotten a close look at his combination of outstanding size, length and shooting prowess, which saw him convert 43% of his 3-pointers at Virginia. He is the one name teams identified as being the biggest snub from this week's Green Room invites, in terms of where they expect him to be picked. The Wizards will likely be attracted to the fact that he's a 21-year old junior who doesn't need the ball and fits their timetable better than most of the teenagers projected to be drafted in this range.

In the zoom call last week Coach Pera said he received a personal invitation from Trey to attend his draft night party.

RE: NBA Draft tonight
Congrats to Trey. If you told me when Pera started we’d have 1st round talent on our teams I would have been pretty happy. Let’s keep finding them and make them want to stay.

RE: NBA Draft tonight
I live in New Orleans, the Pelicans GM is from Alaska, and one of the Pelicans attorneys is a Rice alum, so I guess I am kinda ok with the pick.

Edit: I lied, I didn’t realize JJ Polk had moved on to the Bulls last year!

Jon Rothstein tweet

Trey Murphy's ascension is an incredible story.
Was recruited by Rice and did not average double-figures as a freshman.
Today, he's the 17th pick in the NBA Draft.
America!

We are getting some national attention.

BTW, remember now that Chris Mullins was the most effective freshman at Rice in 2018-19 (and the lone Owl to make the all-freshman team). Not that Murphy wasn't talented, he just was awfully skinny as a freshman.

And also BTW if Trey Murphy didn't twist his knee late in the 2nd half against Houston his sophomore year (Rice led by 7 with 6:30 minutes to go when he got hurt), I bet you Rice closes out that win over Houston (IIRC, they were a Final Eight team that year?). Quenton Grimes hit like 4 3 pointers in a row after Murphy got hurt (Grimes went in the 1st round of the draft tonight as well - to the Knicks).

Don't really follow the NBA anymore, but this is the kind of thing that gives me some hope with Coach Pera. Hope he can use this story to help himslef and us as well. Congrats to Trey.

RE: NBA Draft tonight
We are getting so much publicity from this, I have had multiple non Rice friends reach out to me about Trey Murphy and how Rice was mentioned. I hope Coach Pera can leverage this into recruiting. These are people who have no affiliation with Rice other than they know me, are sports fans and I mention Rice sometimes.
