What could have been?
What could college be like if the following conferences still existed, survived, or only moved around slightly but you added a 16 or say 24 team playoff?

ACC (that keeps South Carolina and still adds FSU)

Big 10 (w/o Penn State)

Big East + A10 hybrid that could have potentially included (PSU, Pitt, WVU, Rutgers, VT, Miami (FL), USF, UL, Cincy, Syracuse, BC, UCONN, and UMASS)

PAC 10

Big 8

SEC (that kept GT)

SWC (that kept Arkansas)

ND Independent

(Since these are pretty much what consolidated into the A5 and maybe soon A4 conferences, I'll leave out mid-majors in this discussion for now though they would exist to some form and would be eligible for playoffs in some form)

I formulated this a few years ago, there would have been around 10 teams per conference, very balanced, probably even ideal for 12-16 team playoff.

Would this Big East + A10 hybrid of yours include BC, UCONN, and UMass (due to, you know, Big East and A10)?...because what a perfect conference that would have been to be a part of in the wildest dreams of UMass.

But I'm guessing you're implying a "merger" where certain teams are left behind there.

In 1990 the SEC was considering an expansion plan that included Arkansas, Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida St, and Clemson.

It took over 30 years, but it appears they are about to have almost what they wanted then. Boy did Florida St and Clemson screw up back then.

Florida State joined the ACC to improve basketball.

Sending more guys into the draft than ever before.

Fast becoming a basketball school over one focused on FB.

That was an oversight when I typed it out. My bad

RE: What could have been?
Would be cool to see those old conferences intact, but GT still makes more sense in the ACC and SC in the SEC.
