ESPN just neutered the B12 either way. Now they can’t even add AAC members as ESPN likely won’t bid.

Fox will have no incentive to give them a bump beyond their devalued amount post UT/OU exits.

The AAC contracts are only $7m per school, while the B12 is drawing over $30m counting the digital ESPN+ part. To lure away one school would require $100m just for 2022-25 time frame, and it would have to run longer than that. But that even assumes 100% of that money goes to the new school and no bonuses to existing members. In reality they'd have to bump the whole conference up almost $20m per school which is $220m a year on top of the $300m a year for three Big 12 schools. We are talking over the remainder of the current AAC contract of ten years or almost $5B.

That just doesn't add up in order to get Texas and Oklahoma out to save $160m.

Exactly right. No possible way any Big 12 teams would consider moving to the AAC.

Now as shady and underhanded as ESPN has been I could see them conspiring with the other P5 conferences to raid the Big 12. Then when 2 or 3 teams are left ESPN would push those schools to join the AAC as a last resort. Saving ESPN millions of dollars

It's about current value of those schools left behind. They are nowhere close to being valued at $30M per yr. Contracts are made to be broken as long as such a breach creates profit.

You can’t conspire with other entities to get out of a contract.

And Bowlsby has proof from the schools the AAC/ESPN contacted.

Aresco is about to look like a fool if was in on this

It’s not like 2011 or 2016 didn’t happen. Anyone think ESPN didn’t help the Big12 fight off the Pac12 in 2011 and give the Big12 W Virginia as a “thanks for playing along prize”? My guess is all these entities are too smart to engage in direct contact. It was likely handled as hypotheticals or through intermediaries.

Word being floated is ESPN was willing to give a major increase in AAC TV dollars to bring in 5 B12 schools and essentially elevate AAC to P5.

The numbers will come out soon, but it's not 7 million.

ESPN is attacking the Big 12 from above and below. I hope that they win and that ESPN has to pay dearly for it.

Aresco is good but it’s always been reactive. He’s trying to make his last stand here, but he will lose as he always has. There is no way 5 teams are leaving for the AAC.

Guaranteed every AAC school is having second thoughts about joining B12.

B12 TV value plummeted further and has made an enemy of ESPN. ESPN will not bid on next TV deal and their next deal will probably be peanuts.

This. Ask CUSA how this song goes. Bye the way—to make matters worse—CUSA even lost the court case.

You obviously aren’t don’t know anything about DIS and how much ESPN has been a drag on their earnings every quarter.

ESPN is falling further and further every quarter, And they know this. Constantly Laying off staff, conspiring to get out of contracts.

You’re so wrap up in the AAC world you are blind to the realities of the situation.

ESPN is their most profitable division. They aren't a growth division any more but they are still massively profitable.

So how did moving away from ESPN help CUSA?

Lol. Yup. Your Stadium contract is super duper awesome. The 1000 pound gorilla remains ESPN. You need them if for no other reason that to run up the bidding. But let’s be honest, if this goes to court do you really think there are no minutes of Big12 meetings and emails discussing stripping the AAC of its top properties? I doubt it. This will never go to court.

ESPN is losing subscription customers because the model is changing from cable to streaming. Guess who has the fastest growing streaming service?

Netflix CEO just came out recently and said they are exploring live sports programming

Apple TV bidding on sports, NFL Sunday ticket possibly

Amazon Prime and Paramount+

YouTube Live Sports

If you think ESPN is going to be the only game especially in a few years you are living in the past.

Amazon alone has the ability to be a main player in live sport programming

Shrug. Stadium ain’t exactly Twitter dude. It’s more like My Space. Look—-In a business with just a few buyers, it’s stupid to anger the biggest bidder. That’s just real world wisdom. This should have been a behind closed door conversation. Going public was not smart.

For the past 20 quarters ESPN has lost subscribers and revenue

Disney+ is a big hit but ESPN+ certainly has not been.

The facts mention in quarter earnings calls are that most new subscribers to ESPN+ are coming from the Disney+ bundle

They'll get it. I doubt ESPN would be happy to get put through discovery. Imagine the amount of dirty laundry that would be aired if they were.

That’s the thing—I doubt either side would really be happy with the results of the discovery process. They both have skeletons. What’s happening is business as usual I suspect.

Yep, and as someone else mentioned, there's no chance ESPN didn't commit the same thing in helping the Big 12 land West Virginia and TCU years ago at the expense of the Big East.

It's all about a settlement. The Big 12 is dying and Bowlsby is trying to cobble together something, anything in order to maybe save the league's existence.

AAC members won't join the Big 12 in this climate, but let's consider that the Big 12 going after ESPN is not the same thing as each remaining member of the Big 12 going after ESPN. Most of the remaining members likely just want a safe and stable landing spot and if ESPN can help them land one then that will be good enough for them.

If the threat of the Big 12 totally imploding wasn't real then Bowlsby likely never makes this play.

Either way, live by the sword and die by the sword.
