Why would they get into a pissing contest with the network that is pretty much holding their conference's further existence in their hand?

No. Its protecting the existing contract to 2025.

It means negotiating the buyout becomes priority. Everything else stops.

Bow shot fired.

So what does ESPN do if one of the remaining Big 12 members calls them? Unless it was signed by the presidents of all 10 schools, I wouldn't assume the letter would prevent that from happening.

That's a very interesting point because we haven't seen this type of cease and desist letter before. Reading between the lines, it's a sign that the Big 12 schools (other than UT and OU, of course) don't have any other P5 landing spots (or else ESPN would inherently need to discuss it with them).

ESPN has made the NHL and NASCAR irrelevant, as well as CUSA. Big 12 tread lightly, they can make your schools irrelevant as well.

And in today’s stock action—Big12 futures plummeted like a rock on rumors that the Big12 might end up getting the CUSA treatment from ESPN after essentially accusing the sports media giant of tampering.

Uhh, ESPN just picked up half of the NHL's new package. Which helped put a direct competitor on it's death bed.

This. (Fill in the blank) to the SEC, B10, PAC12 or ACC speculation can end now.

RE: Thamel: Big XII sends Cease and Desist lettter to ESPN
How could they possible hold that rate of 35 million per year (on average) per school until end of 2025 season (is the final year of the GoR 2024-25?) if OU/UT leave after 22' let's say? That's three dead years with no UT/OU.

If they get 80 million from UT and OU a piece, that's 160 million, or around 20 million over three years sans OU/UT. They still have a shortfall of almost 30 million per year. Can they realistically get all this money back in that window, or most of it?

How does ESPN win a court case unless they come up with that shortfall or at least buy out the Big8 for a sizeable settlement?

Maybe we were thinking about this the wrong way all along. We always thought of p5 conferences being the lifeboats, and they were to an extent....... but the real life boat is ESPN and having them in your corner.

You can't tell the press not to cover the story and pundits not to speculate, regardless of the channel.

Or, ESPN can simply get the SEC to swallow the Big 12 whole.
