How is it different than a journeyman boxer who will go up against the best? He knows he'll get a good payday just for being a punching bag. Old Missus and the like will be just fine crying into their hotty toddies while cashing those 8 figure paychecks.
It will be comical to watch Ole Piss, Arkansuck and MSU battle it out for 6th place in their division; not even the conference. You can easily make the argument that it will take a near miracle for any of them to ever be in the top 10 of the conference.
At the end of the day, whether it is boxing or football; both take their lumps, take the money, and disappear.
Or they spend the money to improve their non-revenue sports and win a national championship in, ah, let’s say, baseball.
That would be fun, but hardly anyone really cares about softball championships.

Most of those fans are happy getting drunk in the grove and either leaving at halftime to go to proud Larry’s before going to a frat party or heading back to the house to talk about the good ole days when Archie was QB.
And they’re the same fans that cheer “SEC” when Alabama wins yet another championship.
Things are really, really interesting right now. TV contracts + NCAA/court rulings on paying players + super conferences. All of these things are happening at the same moment in time.

RE: The big payday
I was talking about all this to a coworker who is a UTK grad and fan. He said that while this is financially better for the school, it's not all that much more money compared to what they already bring in but it makes things worse for the fans. Does the average UT fan really care that the school brings in $15 or $20M or whatever more per year? No, they want to win football games and compete for championships. Adding TX and OK does not help in that regard.
The argument can be made that it's better to be a fan of team that wins big in a middling conference than to be a middling program in the SEC. The only real downside is that we have no realistic path to a football championship, but the vast majority of the P5 schools do not either as evidenced by just 5 teams getting 22 of the 28 available playoff bids in 7 years.

As much as I hate to admit it UTK is a place that if it righted its ship could still get in the mix. No matter how many teams you add there is still Alabama. At some point you have to beat them. They are starting to resemble the other orange UT. All the money in the world but can't get it together. Now, Vandy, OM and MS State need to start asking themselves if the money is worth no shot at even a conference title. I don't think the SEC is through either, Clemson comes to mind and Columbus OH is closer to Lexington, Knoxville, Nashville, Tuscaloosa, Oxford, Starkville, Fayetteville and both Columbia's than it is to Lincoln NE.

That’s maybe the only 100% definite in all of this. Texas will hire a new coach every two years.

If that were true, we wouldn't have so many children hit in crossfire. Maybe our rifle team can give the gangs shooting lessons so they only kill each other?
