Should the conference do anything if NMSU gets grabbed by the MWC?
If the SEC's expansion w/ Oklahoma and Texas leads to trickle down expansion with an MWC team like Boise State or San Diego State going to the Big XII, and then the MWC backfills with NMSU, should the WAC do anything?

There'd be 6 Western schools and 6 Texas schools, so maybe stop interviewing additional Texas schools and stand pat at 12? Or keep going after an extra Texas school and pursue a Western school like NAU or Idaho to balance it out?

RE: Should the conference do anything if NMSU gets grabbed by the MWC?
The bad news for NMSU, is that the Mountain West wants into the Texas market. They will go after the best schools from Texas that want to join. Depending upon how decimated the AAC gets, some targeted schools could include Houston and/or SMU. As many as 1-4 schools could be picked up if it is beneficial for the conference. If the MWC grabs SMU, Rice, UTEP and one other Texas school (UTSA, Texas St or North Texas), they may stop the expansion there. Without a lot of money from a TV partner, I don't think the MWC will go to hog wild on expansion to a sixteen team league.

It is my opinion that if there is more than two Big 12 schools left in the conference, they will reload as the exit fees and NCAA credits will bring in lots of money and the name still holds some prestige. If West Virginia is still in the B12, the expansion will primarily take place in the east.

The good news for NMSU is that they are already FBS and (IMHO) will be picked up before any FCS schools (despite the begging and pleading of a few annoying NDSU fans). If there is "just one more spot" left to fill then NMSU will still be available to round out the numbers. Unless there is a ton of desperation from C-USA or the Sun Belt, I doubt that those conferences will pick up the Aggies. If more than four MWC slots are available, the more likely that NMSU gets an invite. I bet that Idaho is kicking itself right now after moving down to FCS.

So what should the WAC do?

Despite missing a good basketball team, the WAC will be in a good position should no other schools be picked up. Twelve schools is a nice round number and seven of them will be playing football. Football schedules would be three home and three away for league play.

West:
Seattle
Cal-Baptist
Utah Valley
Southern Utah (football)
Utah Tech* (football)
Grand Canyon

South:
Abilene Christian (football)
Lamar (football)
Sam Houston St (football)
Stephen F Austin (football)
Tarleton St (football)
Texas-RGV

I think the WAC has to worry if a FBS league starts pulling FCS schools up. I recall Lamar was rumored for a WAC invite back when the league was still FBS. Should a decimated Sun Belt need FBS schools, I'm certain that a WAC Texas team or two may be considered.

Then what should the WAC do?

I'm pretty confident if the Sun Belt had to search for a new member or two their first thought would be to try and poach a CUSA school or two. Which might lead to CUSA taking NMSU if that were to happen and if they said no we'd probably reinvite NMSU to the Belt. Not sure how receptive they'd be due to the history.

I honestly don't believe there is any bad blood from the administration. I think everyone knew what the scenario was and why it happened.

I could be wrong, but in my opinion, if the SBC came calling with an all sports invite (not contingent, but full membership) we would almost have to accept if the goal for NMSU is to get all sports in the same conference.

If it's a few years down the road and we have a better understanding of where the WAC is headed for football, the answer may be different.

GO AGGIES!!!!

WAC should say thanks and enjoy your full membership to wherever they are heading to. The WAC also should keep with current plan regardless of who might dip from the league.

I think this is right. If the Big 12 rebuilds by decapitating the AAC and that leaves Houston or more likely SMU looking for a new home, it could trigger an MWC expansion. And that expansion is likely to prioritize coverage of the major Texas metros over adding NMSU.

However there’s very little talk about this so far on the MWC board. I think everyone is still waiting to see if the Big 12 rebuilding project will include any MWC schools. Early rumors are that the Big 12 is looking east instead of west (with BYU being the exception) but until the MWC is out of danger no one is making grandiose expansion predictions.

The issue with NMSU is that if UTEP goes MWC (and NMSU doesn’t) - there’s no reason for CUSA to expand to bring Aggies in. It serves no benefit in trying to tighten the league geography which can be served by bringing up a Sun Belt institution or even a James Madison.

Losing NMSU will not impact the WAC in any stretch as it relates to expansion plans or not. As Moccia says, 12 or 14 is better than 13! :)

NMSU isn't going anywhere. GCU will get picked up by the WCC before we leave.

I'm not so sure any Sun Belt school other than maybe us would consider CUSA. I'm not even sure we would go for it at this point. The JMU board seems to be pretty anti anything subAAC as well.

I would think so as well.

For the folks in San Marcos, to be with North Texas, UT-San Antonio and Rice would be ideal for the Bobcats. Three trips within three hours drive and likely annual sporting events in the major student/alumni bases of Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.

I also think Louisiana-Lafayette or UL-Monroe would go the CUSA route too if given the chance. For those schools, trips to Texas maintained (and enhanced) while getting to play La Tech and USM. Both schools would also renew rivalries with former Sun Belt rivals as well.

I mean it would be nice to be with the other Texas schools but we already have like a 10 year series with UTSA so we're kinda okay with being on our island. Not sure us or any of the La schools would want to give up our Sun Belt deal with ESPN for the Frankensteins monster that is CUSAs TV deal, especially after the recent extension of our deal. And La Tech would totally block ULM.

Well, if there are people who give a sh!t where Texas State goes, who they play, where their alums live, or how far it is to their nearest rivals, this ain't the place to discuss it. Ditto for non New Mexico State related CUSA and Sunbelt news, updates, and speculation. Ditto for ongoing Southland chatter that doesn't relate to any Western Athletic Conference members or potential members.

If they did care about those topics, they wouldn't be looking in a New Mexico State to the Mountain West thread. If you don't want to talk about the Western Athletic Conference , don't come here and post.

I agree NMSU is most likely Mountain West or stay at this point.

I’m not even sure the Big XII doesn’t implode. All it would take is a few more defections which is highly possible.

RE: Should the conference do anything if NMSU gets grabbed by the MWC?
The Sun Belt's media deal is better than Conference-USA (actually everyone in FBS has a better deal than them), they have a tighter footprint, and they have been putting a better product on the field in recent years. CUSA schools would jump ship immediately to something like the AAC, but they won't find schools eager to backfill that are already in the FBS. Logistically, I think the SBC would rather keep going the path of FCS call-ups in the southeast than extend into another time zone.

UT and OU are worth roughly 75% of the BXII. If additional schools see long-term paths available (Kansas to the B1G, WVU to ACC, TxTech/ISU/KState/OkState to PAC, etc.) they would rather take the buy-out and do their thing with most likely Baylor and TCU fighting to keep it alive because they know they'd be relegated to either the MWC or AAC.

I think there is bad blood with the SBC and NMSU. I don' think the SBC ever forgave NMSU for leaving to join the WAC. When NMSU gave it's presentation for full membership, there were reports that the SBC commish and others had already made up their minds and were very dismissive. I don't think the SBC would ever invite NMSU back.

Dang. I didnt even think about that. When was that like 2005? Crazy how the tables have turned. FWIW alot of SBC fans wish we invited yall for full membership.

Who was the Commish back then? Wasn't it the snake oil salesman Benson? That probably had a lot to do with it too. Not sure who all is still around from that time frame, and whether time has healed any wounds.

I don't believe there is any animosity on NMSU's part, but I could see the SBC having some heartburn over it as PP stated above.

You are correct. The response form the fanbases was positive towards NMSU. I think Benson was the one spewing venom. I think he felt burned when NMSU left, but how could they not? At the time, the WAC was on equal footing with the MWC.
