FCS Playoff Expansion Discussion on Table
In light of the recent additions of the WAC and ASUN to the list of conferences who will have automatic bids in the coming years, could the FCS playoff field expand once more?

Currently at 24 teams but the Big Sky Commish indicated interest in expansion during Big Sky media days today.

(Note: the WAC seems to have been given a waiver knowing that they will have five eligible teams and two in transition; ASUN should be adding a sixth team before long and likely will get waiver too once it's known they have sixth en route)

Makes sense to do so.

RE: FCS Playoff Expansion Discussion on Table
No. In each of the new conferences, there would be a good enough team in most years to take an at large bid, so this isn't really making it much more difficult to make the playoffs, since a team from these conferences would make it as an at large even if the new conferences didnt get auto bids. FCS will only become more watered down as teams move to FBS in the future, and there already enough blow out playoff games as it is.

Theres a logical argument for it, but a huge % of FCS fans think the tournament field is already to big. I'm not in that camp, but I think the current number is great, as there is a good balance of both accessibility and competitiveness as it is. If the NCAA does anything to change the tournament, if they are going to add expenses, they should simply seed the entire bracket instead of only the top 3rd of teams. FCS fans will not want this, and it's not needed. There just isn't enough quality depth/parity beyond the top 25ish teams in a given year. This is coming from a fan of a program that was recently snubbed from the playoffs despite going 7-4 with an FBS win.

I see no need for expansion.

Once things 'settle', there will be 12 automatic bids and 12 at-large bids.

That should be nice and balanced going forward; looking at the 2019 season - you would have been looking at a 7-5 fourth place team from the Big Sky, Colonial or Southland if not a third-place 7-5 team from the Ohio Valley. I could do without!

As long as it is less than 32, you aren't adding any weeks.

The conferences are the ones pushing for the expansion - from an NCAA standpoint, all that is needed is double the number of auto-bids.

RE: FCS Playoff Expansion Discussion on Table
There are 127 FCS schools including the 4 reclassifying.

26 schools (Ivy, MEAC, SWAC) don't participate in the playoffs.

That leaves 101 schools that will be available, following reclassification, for a ratio of 1 in 4.2 making the playoffs. At 32, the ratio is 1 in 3.1. A 24-team bracket is perfect at this time and going to 32 only waters down the playoff. It would be fine to expand to 32 if all schools participated, that would be a ratio of 1 in 3.9.

How about expansion to 28 teams? Adds 2 autobids and 2 at-large teams. Then either the top 4 conference champs or top 4 teams get a bye.

Maybe this is setting up for 5 years down the road when the top FBS schools are long gone and the schools left behind, and the current FCS schools join up.

Playoffs are watered down as it is.

16 Team Playoff was perfect for years.

As it is right now IAA has maybe 3-4 teams each year that might have a chance at a National Championship. And as NDSU has proved the last 8-10 years its a one horse race.

Column by one of the NDSU media about playoff field expansion - still not on board with it and the poll on the page seems to indicate others agree

The same could be said of Fbs. So why expand to twelve you only seem to need 2.
However by having representative from every conference it makes the playoffs more fun to watch and allows fans to participate from all over. It also leaves open the improbable Cinderella team. Do you really need 64 for the NCAA basketball tourney?

RE: FCS Playoff Expansion Discussion on Table
Big Sky Commish weighs in

Quote: The more pressing issue for Wistrcill is the conference realignment within the FCS and how the increase in automatic bids for new leagues would limit at-large bids for Big Sky teams. The relaunched Western Athletic Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference have a scheduling alliance allowing for a new automatic bid into the playoffs this year. When they become separate leagues in 2022, they should each get an automatic bid, taking away two AQ spots from the last full season in 2019.

“What I’m concerned about there is we’re one of the power conferences, we want at-large bids, so any time there’s an extra AQ, that takes away at-large bids for a conference like ours that might get four or five schools in,” Wistrcill said. “We’re monitoring that. We’re talking a lot about it. I think, to me, that’s the direct impact on us as a league because I want as many at-large opportunities as possible.”

There has never been a so called Cinderella win or even come close to it. In 2003 an undefeated Colgate from the Patriot League made the championship game only to be the only team shutout in the title game 40-0 by Delaware. In 2002 you could say WKU was a mild upset when they beat #1 McNeese and the closet thing to a Cinderella winning would be 11 seed UMass beating 1 Seed GA Southern.

All expanding the playoffs done was insure more blowout 1st round wins.

It just won't go away.

Big Sky Commish chimes in on expansion. I am against adding eight additional teams; the quality of play will take a dramatic tumble. Can you imagine a North Dakota State taking on a 9-2 or 8-3 Pioneer League team? Ick!

Looking at who that could be now, we're talking Morehead State who got beat by 58 by James Madison and lost by 24 to Austin Peay. Does that really add value? I can't imagine they'd like a whole bunch of 6-5 teams in from across the country but that may be what we have if you look beyond the two and three loss Pioneer squads.

===
So much of what's happening in college football is tied to when and how the College Football Playoff eventually expands. The logistics of FBS playoff expansion impact conference realignment decisions all the way down to D-II. They'll impact budget projections, media rights negotiations, scheduling agreements, and more.

But the FBS playoffs aren't the only college football postseason event that could potentially change formats. What about the FCS Playoffs?

At least one conference commissioner tells me he favors expanding that as well.

No one understands not just ignores what you're saying. Every media article says there is a neverending positive correlation of money to adding more playoff teams.

Look at MLB, 2 100-win teams will not make the final four simply because of the terrible MLB format and the complete lack of advantage for teams that dominate.

They should wait until they see how many auto bids they have. What if the MEAC decides to end the Celebration Bowl and go back to the Playoffs? That would be 13 and make an expansion mandatory (then at least go to 28).

The same people arguing against a 7-5 OVC team are the same that complain that a 24-4 OVC team gets shafted in the NCAA Men's Basketball tourney.

Should probably go to 43 bowls instead.
