ESPN loves since The Return. They have become a powerful ally and there are many things that have, and will, happen because they are all over our story.

They loved us so much they matched us in a bowl with a losing team that didn't want to play and then didn't find a replacement. I've seen zero evidence of this ESPN love of which you continue to speak. If they love us so much we should be accepting our AAC invitation right about now.

We are nothing to The Mouse.

Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Our fortunes have been bright, future is extremely bright, and ESPN has had more of a role behind the scenes than most think. Sleep soundly regarding realignment. As for CUSA, giving ESPN the finger was idiotic. But we’re not CUSA we’ve just been a member…and many times a very angry member.

Don't discount the fact that UAB gave ESPN a middle finger of its own in the not so distant past (2008). After that, there was quite a long period when all of ESPN was actively working against us over that. I have first hand knowledge that Men's basketball lost out on a nationally televised done deal men's basketball matchup against Arizona which was announced as part of a doubleheader in Phoenix. When the whole thing fell apart, ESPN squarely pointed the finger at UAB as the cause of the collapse of the event.

There are still some folks over there still holding a grudge.

UAB is the 2nd most valuable tv entity in C-USA (after Marshall), and the No. 1 entity for FB/MBB combo. That and a dollar won't buy you a cup of coffee.

Does that mean we get more games on Facebook and some Chik Fil A coupons?

RE: The "bitter taste" challenge
I do not doubt that ESPN views UAB more favorably than it once did. That is one of the reasons -- but still pretty far down the list -- that UAB is best positioned to go to the AAC despite what fans will say at this time. It doesn't hurt, that's for sure.

A problem for UAB and all the C-USA teams is that they have been off metered cable for so long that they don't show up in comparative ratings. Out of sight, out of mind.

To be fair, and I know this response isn't to me...but a lot of my job is solving hypothetical problems. If the AD Marketing Department isn't solving hypothetical problems, that in itself is a REAL problem.

RE: The "bitter taste" challenge
You get one shot in our lifetimes to do this. The plan needs to be a lot more meet and greet than traditional ways of doing things and "build it and they will come." College athletics pretty much follows the cookie cutter strategies taught in a handful of athletic administration programs. There are very few new ideas and there is very little innovation because everyone is risk averse. What if you didn't spend 6 figures on billboards / traditional advertising that no one looks at because their face is in their phones and you can't track their success, and then you didn't meet your goals? Gasp.
