Olympics Megathread
No fans, who cares. I'll still be watching the Tokyo Olympics.

Team USA isn't off to the greatest start. No medals on Saturday (that's the first day that's happened in a Summer Games since 1972 for Team USA, but to be fair, there weren't a ton of medals awarded that day). And Sunday was a rather good day for Team USA (except for the start for men's basketball - it might be hard for the men to even get to the podium).

But the highlight of the day for me was watching the new skateboard event. It seems to me that the one event they held right away (street style - maybe the park style is more disciplined?) is just try crazy tricks until you get one right. I think I'll tell my neighbors' 12-year-old son that he is on track for the Olympics with all the little flip moves he constantly tries (and fails) on our street.

I need to find the best highlight though - in the prelims, there was a Puerto Rican skateboarder who fell and his iPhone fell out of his pocket. He had to pick it up, and also lift up his baggy pants that were falling down. Hopefully, someone posts a meme of that moment soon.

USA BBall lost for the first time since the Ginobli game in Athens. Good riddance. Can’t stand Popovich.

I always love watching handball/water polo, very underrated sports. Fun to catch a couple of minor events and learning the rules as it goes along (curling was interesting back in 2018 when USA also won our first gold there), but I hate when NBC dedicates half an hour to talking heads and a sob story I don't care about when there's a dozen events featuring fantastic athletes and interesting games that go unnoticed.

I know this makes me an old man but I HATE the X-game evolution of the Olympics

I'm thinking speed texting will be an event by 2028 or 2032.

Back to the Games, a triathlete from Bermuda won the women's triathlon today. I think that's the smallest country ever to have won a Gold in the Summer Games (Bermuda's population is like 70,000 people). She lives and trains in Boulder, CO and graduated from the University of Colorado, but she was born in Bermuda and has represented them in triathlons for a long time now.

NBC's ratings haven't been great. But if Simone Biles decides to compete in Thursday's All-Around (after dropping out in the team finals today due to mental fatigue) - and competes at her usual high level. Then NBC might have boffo ratings.

But it's sort of a Catch 22. Biles is feeling the pressure of the gymnastics world that she has to be the GOAT in women's gymnastics, and she's 24 - which in gymnastics terms is like a baseball player in their 40's. She's got all of those endorsements weighing on her too in what is likely going to be her final competition ever (if she does in fact compete on Thursday).

I feel badly for her - even getting to this point has been a remarkable accomplishment and has taken a ton of sacrifice. I wish her well regardless of what happens with her at these Olympics.

Team USA took some big hits this morning - the favored women's softball and gymnastics teams were upset and had to settle for disappointing silver medals.

RE: Olympics Megathread
Well Simone Biles isn't going to compete in the all around either (and likely the individual events next week), so that's also a bunch of medals that will be gone by the wayside.

Something tells me that athletic departments are going to need a lot of sports psychologists in the future as college athletics becomes pro athletics 1A. Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka are pretty good indications that the pressures for the elite athletes to always be on their game is just too tough on 23-24 year olds, and when college athletes suddenly start making $1 million a year, they will crack under the pressure too - just wait and see.

Cincinnati alum and volleyball player Jordan Thompson has been dazzling. She scores 34 points the other night in a win over China.
