I wanted the AAC to do the same thing with those two and Clemson.

LOL, this is exactly what I was saying the Big 12 had to do if they had any hope of keeping Texas and OU. That as awful as it sounds it yields them more money per school than going on without them.

It should be very clear they will want Texas and OU to stay to the end of the GOR if they can't keep them for the next contract. It's the same financial incentive.

Basically it's saying, if the B12 pays $40m per school we (little 8) will cut our shares to $35m so you two (UT and OU) can get $60m each. They understand that their valuation drops below $20m without Texas and Oklahoma, that this is for them a good deal. And not just financially, but in terms of exposure.

I don't think it works, although it does get them almost on par with the SEC, as it does not increase their exposure the way belonging to the SEC would with it's superior promotion machine.

Interesting but probably too late.

They're basically admitting it's the Big 2 and Little 8 - an unbalanced conference that should be split up..

Accepting your premise, if the Big 12 is now getting $40MM each for ten teams ($400MM total), the Little 8 could agree to take $30MM each ($240MM) which would leave $80MM each for OU and UT. That might be enough if money were the only consideration, but it isn't. It probably just delays the inevitable breakup of a league that has been unstable from the start.

Looking at the way the article suggests restructuring the payouts, they have OU and UT each getting 1.5 shares of the revenues distribution. My guess is that it would take giving them each 3 shares to make them even seriously consider it.

The question is whether the announcement of intent to leave was meant to induce the Little 8 to make a counteroffer like this, or whether they have already crossed the Rubicon, as it were.

If OU/UT caved last time, they might cave this time. Maybe they’ll both end up in the PAC12 after all some time in the 2030’s.

Does the bribe include allowing OU/TX to control the kick-off times for their home football games?

The Big East did the same thing back in 2003 when Miami announced they were joining The ACC.

Last time was a little different. Then, nothing concrete had made its way into the media - only speculation. This time, maybe deliberately, maybe not, there was a very specific assertion that both had already agreed to move to the SEC before anyone had the time and opportunity to make a counterproposal. Neither UT nor OU have denied the truth of that assertion.

If either or both were to now renege on their deal with the SEC it would have to be with the understanding that they are never going to leave the Big 12 because they would have burned the last bridge to the SEC and maybe the B1G as well. They would be viewed in the future as a faithless negotiator (and rightly so). Probably neither could command as much as a football independent as they could get today from either the SEC or B1G.

The only thing that would save them from a lifetime in the Big 12 would be a radical change in the landscape of college football in which a very small number (fewer than 50, IMO) of very rich schools would break away from the rest. If that's going to happen, it will probably happen within the timeframe of the existing Big 12 contracts (that is, by 2025). And since they would certainly be expected to be in the breakaway group, they would probably already be in informal discussions with peer institutions that would give them a sense of what is likely.

Oklahoma and Texas are gone. The division setup and playoff expansion along with the money will be too great. Plus with cord-cutting, they have to evolve with the times. The Big 4 in the SEC West now is A&M, LSU, OU and Texas and the SEC East has Alabama, Florida, Georgia and if they ever get their s*** together, Tennessee and you can add Auburn to the list too. The SEC is stacked under total control by ESPN who will control the playoff. It's a no brained and must watch college football.
