The reference to the "First Republic-Interfirst Bank merger" is interesting.
In the 1980's, Dallas had two of the 20 largest banks in the nation. They decided to merge, and ultimately it sank both of them, putting most of the area's other banks (which tumbled as well) under federal bankruptcy protection. For six or seven years, the unofficial motto of downtown Dallas was "Member, FDIC".
