A golden goose will only get so big before it will quit being the golden goose - and history has shown us over and over again that when that point comes, it will only be recognized in hindsight."

Well, seems so at the present trajectory. And, will the NCAA eligibility rules be next to go once unionization is established and players become employees? A school can pay a player for as long as both the player and school have a contract?

Employer/Employee relationship brings OSHA into the equation. Be interesting to see how OSHA views football :)

Interesting. We are not there yet but would it not be similar to the NFL?

If teams in the SEC and Big Ten end up unionized similar to the NFL while lesser conferences downgrade or outright cut sports, I wonder what the odds are that at some point a college football season could be delayed if not outright cancelled due to a lockout.

A hot FBS level coach, even at an elite program, may not like or enjoy having to deal with agents or lawyers of the NFL Players Association or whatever outfit.

Imagine if FCS level ETSU or UTC have the annual cupcake game against Tennessee or Georgia, only for the FBS teams to be on strike. If the Bucs or Mocs are still willing and able to play but can't on account of Tennessee or Georgia being unable to play, and not due to some sort of disaster or anything, would that result in a forfiet in favor of ETSU or UTC? Or would everyone involved write the game off but quietly allow the FCS team to keep any money owed or already given to them?

It just seems a stretch to foresee the NIL, the Transfer Portal, and the long range working smoothly together for the end goal of benefiting these young students, and only them.

Who regulates your insurance co.? Who regulates your McDonald's fries? Who regulates your lawnmowing service? Yes, there *are* answers to *these* questions (sort of), but not to this new college athletes world. An infrastructure of some sort will emerge. However...............such will evolve over time, but it'll be very confusing and chaotic for a while.

But here's the bigger rub (imo)...............the currently evolving scenario is one in which FANS are paying the players for the right to be their fans. The universities, who rake in many millions for their services, only get to take in $$, not fork it out. Ultimately, that doesn't make sense, and there will have to be some way for the universities' income to be used to pay players - yes, just like MLB, or NBA G League, or whatever analogy one can muster. And yes, very likely some sort of collective bargaining arrangement. I could wax poetic about this further, but no need. I think you get the picture. Or part of it.

The high-major schools have the money to go pro now as they continually work to concentrate even more of the money going forward — certainly with football and basketball. The mid-major schools do not have the money and have no prospects of finding more money. These two NCAA divisions can no longer operate under the same system, the same rules in that the mid-majors will be driven into bankruptcy. How can ETSU and its peers finance athletic programs if they have to negotiate contracts with players that pays said players above and beyond what they’re providing them already with athletic scholarships? The simple, realistic, financial answer — they can’t. If this thing continues on its present trajectory — what will ETSU Athletics look like in ten years as UT and the rest of the big folks will be running pro athletic programs?

Beat me to it.

From other reporting...........I know that the SoCon has been labeled (at least by one/some agency/agencies) as a "Tier 4" league. And *generally* NIL compensation is in the $5,000-$50,000 for those players - which is very much in line with the figures Sander mentions.

RE: NIL AND ETSU
Doc Sander —- “It’s kind of a crazy world,” he said. “Is it good? Me personally, I think it’s not good at all, I think it’s a nightmare. I wish our student-athletes would play for the love of the game, for the love of their teammates, for the love of the coach, all those sorts of things.”

Doc will not be around to see this through. It’s amazing he’s still there. Nah — for me, my enthusiasm for college sports - certainly football and basketball — is so diminished in that there’s no longer a level playing field for anything approaching amateur competition played by student-athletes pursuing college degrees. It’s rigged top to bottom grossly favoring those schools with the most collective MONEY to go out and buy teams.

The article — “Athletes also must continue to meet the academic benchmarks required to maintain NCAA eligibility. Those include passing a certain number of credits every semester and meeting a percentage toward their degree every year. If a player wants to transfer, they don’t get a free pass just by going to a new institution — their academic and other eligibility record follows them there.” Give me a break — this is little more than the lipstick for the proverbial pig.

I find it very interesting that despite UT’s success in basketball this year, NIL coffers, facilities, etc, they still have 4 of their players in the portal, and a couple of pretty good ones. So it looks like transfers will happen regardless of how much NIL money you can pay or how successful the team is. People are always looking for “one more.” We’re never satisfied.
