UPDATE! Brian Thornton to be WAC Commissioner
And the search is on!

Love how transparent the WAC is being with this process and just by even having on their website to the general public shows what steps they are taking to hiring a new Commissioner, generates more buzz and hey - we got the timeline.

Quote:DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference today issued a request for proposals (RFP) to aid in the identification of candidates in its national search for conference commissioner.

It is the intent of the Board of Directors to conduct a national search to establish a pool of highly qualified candidates. It is anticipated that an offer will be accepted by the preferred candidate by November 1, 2021 with an official start date of January 1, 2022.

Current WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd announced earlier this month that he will step down after 37 years with the conference, effective December 31, 2021.

Proposals are due to Denise Bullard by 3 p.m. MT on August 10, 2021. A copy of the RFP can be found here.

If the WAC waits long enough, the Big XII Commissioner might be looking for a new job; since that conference might be DOA once Texas and Oklahoma leave.

Would you want the Big12 dude at this point?

The conference is falling apart under him.

Good point, and we probably need someone who has proven they can build without Brand Name schools like UT and OU or without an almost endless pot of money.

We had an AD (Boston) that came from the P5 ranks and while he did some good things, I think he underestimated the hustle needed to make up for a lack of $$$. Similar thought process.

GO AGGIES!!!!

Well, Texas schools who you want? CollegeAD is sharing the Texas schools are aligned here and hints at a Texas connection for the new Commissioner

Boston expected the dollars to be there, not having to work to get them.

An ouster? The man has served the WAC for 37 years and has been the Commish for 10 of those. He is also up there in age. Could it possibly be that he just wants to retire? Typically the simplest reason is the correct one.

Being “asked” to retire unexpectedly during an executive committee meeting is probably not how he was expecting to step away per the reports from CollegeAD per two sources

Write up dives into the Texas schools being aligned and working together - as they probably should

The Texas schools still represent a minority of conference members and so will still need to be respectful of the views and interests of the other members - as they probably should.

If they form an alliance with Tarleton State and UT Rio Grande Valley as well, the Texas 4 will become the Texas 6 and represent nearly half the conference.

The fear of the Texas 6 schools voting in block may be the reason the WAC also worked to get Southern Utah. If there is ever a majority of schools in one state (i.e., Texas) than several years down the road the balance of power could be lost.

We are now essentially 2 conferences, at greats odds with each other, but sharing one autobid. It's was one stupid move after another. UTech, and now SUU joining are the only smart moves the WAC has made lately.

Can't wait for things to get back to a more stable state, and hopefully get a good new leader who can bring some sanity and stability back.

I guess we have to see how this plays out. This is the only reason I didn’t want to add all these Texas schools. As long as the new Comish is neutral, I’m good with that.

I would expect after SU is tossed out of the WAC we will see CBU and GCU being more eager to leave I bet....

I can see that happening too. That would suck.

I don't think there's any realistic chance of SU being tossed. I do see a chance of SU leaving, if the Big 12 pulls BYU from the WCC or the WAC finds a way to pry NAU away from the Big Sky. In either of those scenarios SU comes into play as a potential backfill.

I assume they already have, but that still doesn't give them voting control. Even adding a seventh member in Texas to balance the conference won't give them voting control, unless NMSU decides to throw in with them. The reality is that both sides of the conference will have to work together for the common good whether they like it or not.

I've pointed this out before but I'll say it again: the country's fastest-growing states (as measured by the population increase from the 2010 to the 2020 census) are #1 Arizona, #2 Utah and #3 Texas. The WAC is the only D1 conference that spans Arizona, Utah and Texas. It would be dumb for either side of the WAC to work to advance their own interests at the expense of the other, when there's such a huge opportunity to build success together.

I don't really think its a factor either way but does being the 1st and 2nd fastest growing states really matter all that much when the 3rd fastest growing is 3 times the size as those two combined?
