No more offensive than any of hundreds of other mascots involving people of all times and backgrounds. Not PC enough though for today and chose bland over something of meaning that would have upset the wrong people.
That's what I would have gone with. Tribes are pretty universal. There were European tribes, African tribes, Aboriginal Australian tribes, etc...
I don't mind the Guardians... I think people will become fonder of the name as time passes.

It has something to do with a local bridge nicknamed the Guardians or something like that. At least it's not something already used by a major sports team so it's unique in that regard, even if it's a bit underwhelming. I don't think Spiders would happen since the last Cleveland team to do that was the worst in major league history and they wouldn't want to associate with that.

Guardians is much better than Indians, but much worse than Spiders. Opportunity blown!

RE: OT: "Cleveland Guardians"?
reminded me of this first:
Why not just call them the "Dians" since that seems like what everyone can agree with. Cleveland Dians.

I'm not "authentically Cleveland," but I lived in Cleveland for 5 years. Not in the suburbs, in the city itself.
Those statues are on the bridge right by the ballpark - it's a huge bridge that spans the whole Cuyahoga River valley (not just the river itself, which is very small by Midwestern standards). I'm a big fan of public statues, so I always thought they looked nice. But I never knew that they had a name. And people rarely walk by those statues (the bridge is too long for most people to bother walking).
** edit - according to wikipedia, they're called the Guardians of Traffic (not the Guardians of Transportation).
** edit #2 - it's actually 8 statues, not 4. So they're not even famous enough for that phd guy on Twitter to get the name or the basic facts right.

RE: OT: "Cleveland Guardians"?
I grew up in Northeast Ohio watching those great Tribe teams of the mid 90s but I can’t support this giant cave in to Woke culture. I wish the Cleveland Gardenias (or shall we say Pansies?) nothing but failure and misery.
