the nickname "guardians" sounds a bit dystopian to me

Lame.... I've really started to dig the Washington Football Team name. Maybe Cleveland shouldve just stayed "Cleveland".

Unique. Not what I was anticipating, but can't say it reminds me of a different team in another sport.

Just a name...don’t know why American Teams have to have nicknames....heck in Europe they are known more as Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid etc..etc.

If Tom Hanks can't even make it sound authentic, not sure what hope the rest of the sports world has.

Kind of agree, actually. In the same way the Mets are actually "The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc" and Mets is just shorthand, I think I'd have preferred something along the lines of "The Cleveland Baseball Club" with "Cleveland" away and "C.B.C" home branding, maybe with "The Club" alternates.

I was hoping for Cleveland Americans for a number of reasons. Tied to the old name in way, plus they would be the AL version of the Washington Nationals.

Because our newspapers/sports reporters were more creative.

Just because Europeans do some things different doesn't mean they do it better.

Would have enjoyed a return of the Cleveland Spiders or the Cleveland Blues. Guardians just sounds like a generic Madden-inspired name that has no thought, originality or connection to the city or state.

Those teams have nicknames too, just not as prominent:

RE: OT: "Cleveland Guardians"?
I suspect they chose "guardians" because it lets the new logo look a lot like the old logo. It's uncanny how similar they look given that the first half of the words are different.

It makes a certain amount of sense if you think about the fact that fans will continue to wear old "Indians" apparel in the ballpark for several decades.

Wish they would have just become The Tribe (long time nickname). No more offensive than any of hundreds of other mascots involving people of all times and backgrounds. Not PC enough though for today and chose bland over something of meaning that would have upset the wrong people.

Darn, I was hoping they'd go with Ohio Indians to troll everyone.

It has something to do with a local bridge nicknamed the Guardians or something like that. At least it's not something already used by a major sports team so it's unique in that regard, even if it's a bit underwhelming. I don't think Spiders would happen since the last Cleveland team to do that was the worst in major league history and they wouldn't want to associate with that.
