Hit .400 in 30 AB over 18 games last season

Is it just me or is it strange to play in 33 games, starting in 18 of them, but only have 30 ABs?

It is extremely weird to look at...

But doesn't softball have this weird "designated player" rule? I seem to remember something like that from watching JMU's run.

EDIT - Yes...here is the rule explained:

Interesting, thank you! 04-cheers

In a perfect scenario, you’d DP for a player who isn’t good offensively but is a defensive wizard. This is why it frustrated me that JMU would often DP for their first baseman last year. Speaks to how too heavy the lineup was. Hopefully they get a first base woman who can actually hit, along with filling in their other multiple holes left by graduated Seniors.

RE: 2022 Dukes Softball
This year is definitely going to be a growing pain year, it’s hard to project even a Diamond depth chart when we lost most of the starting lineup. This is going to be a very young team with a lot of new starters. Returning starters classified as starting > 50% of games. Here are the class counts.

Overall:
r-Sr - 1
r-Jr - 4 (1 returning starter shared by Shifflett and Hall, Hall who would DP for Shifflett)
r-So - 2 (1 returning starter in Phillips)
So - 6 (2 returning starters in Bernett and Humphrey*)
Fr - 9

The freshmen should be very interesting as there were a few highly rated recruits in the batch. In two years’ time this could be a very dangerous team (similar to the WCWS team) but this will most likely mimic Loren’s first year in (43-14, 1-2 Knoxville regional) where the 2021 stars were Fr./So.

Position players maybe, but this team does not have a Megan Good caliber pitcher/player. That is a HUGE difference.

I say this not to knock the team, but set reasonable expectations. I think/hope in 2023 we will be increasing our pitching talent. Alissa is a potential CAA POY, and should continue to fair well/dominate in CAA play, but "I" don't think she has yet shown she can hold her own versus top 40 lineups.

Be interesting to see if we have anyone on the roster capable of supplying power numbers. Even among the starters last season, the bottom 3 in the batting order were of little threat (the top 6 in the order have all graduated). And the reserves barely played.

LaPorte's first year was the year Megan was injured

It's also strange to bat 400 as a freshman and only get 30 ABs.

Looks to be a great pickup, but yeah - those stats bring up a lot of relevant questions. Wonder why they are what they are?

Alissa got the start in the first game today and threw a perfect game in a 10-0 run rule victory. She totaled 7 K's in 4 innings.

I take it they have a slaughter rule. 02-13-banana

Not sure how good the opponent was, but that she started the first game certainly is a positive.

RE: 2022 Dukes Softball
It appears that she has gotten a lot better in just this year.
We needed a strong pitcher this season and it seems like we have it in Humphrey.
And to think, she's only a Sophmore.
Anyone know much about who our second pitcher would be?

2022 schedule out.

pretty good schedule. but not the powerhouse schedules of years past.

which may be ok as its a whole new team next year.

RE: 2022 Dukes Softball
Seems like an appropriate and solid schedule.

That should give us an "opportunity" to make the NCAA tourny, and if we exceed my expectations we could still possible host in the first round.

My best guess for the year would be a top 40ish 3rd seed in the NCAA tournament, but certainly not as much as a lock as prior years. Ironically we were a 3rd seed last year with a more proven team, but a very soft schedule.

RE: 2022 Dukes Softball
Good games with Florida, UCF, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, and Arkansas. All were NCAA qualifiers last year. Most of the other teams were all over .500 last year. Need to pick up 2-3 wins against the first group and we will be in good shape for NCAA tourney if we have a good conference record.
