SI Tony Barnhart..Texas & Oklahoma have made up their minds to leave the Big XII
Mr. College Football Tony Barnhart has spoken....Pretty much a DONE DEAL...Texas and Oklahoma to the Southeastern Conference...From the Article:
I was told late Wednesday night that Oklahoma and Texas have made up their minds that they are leaving the Big 12. The Big 12’s television contracts with ESPN and FOX end in 2025 and, according to published reports, those teams have told the conference they will not be a part of the next round of TV negotiations.
The Big 12 members each received about $34.5 million in shared revenue last season, down by about $3.5 million. The SEC, by contrast, distributed $45.5 million to each of its 14 schools. The SEC also dipped into future revenues from its TV contracts to give another $23 million in supplemental income to each school because of the hardship brought on by the pandemic.
In 2024 the SEC will enter a new 10-year television rights agreement with ABC/ESPN for its football Game of the Week, which is currently on CBS. CBS pays $55 million a year for that game. The new ABC/ESPN deal will play $300 million per year for that one game. And that’s on top of its current multi-billion-dollar deal that the SEC and ESPN have for the rest of its games.
The SEC bylaws state that in order to bring in a new member it must be approved by 75 percent of the members. That means that there would have to be five “no” votes out of 14 schools to deny entry.
Texas A&M, Missouri, and Arkansas, three schools that recruit the state of Texas heavily, would definitely be against the entry of the Longhorns. Alabama has 10 Texans on its 2021 roster. LSU has seven.
But here’s the reality. The presidents hired commissioner Greg Sankey to protect the long-term future of the Southeastern Conference and he has done an incredible job of that since taking over for Mike Slive in 2015. His performance in the COVID-19 football season of 2020 earned him a rightful spot as the dominant voice of college athletics.
Bottom line: If Greg Sankey believes that adding Texas and Oklahoma is best for the future of the SEC in an ever-changing landscape, then it will happen. There will be some passionate discussion about this. Commissioner Slive always said that “the First Amendment is alive and well in the Southeastern Conference.”
But if a vote is taken it will be 14-0 and every SEC member will be on board. That’s the way the SEC rolls and that’s why Texas and Oklahoma want to be a part of it.

Tired of hearing "ever changing landscape". Tired of schools running for a buck at every opportunity, milking their fan bases and alumni with wacky geography, longer drives, expensive tickets, and "ever rising" tuition. Fans should be rioting as they did in Europe, but who are we kidding? We are going to watching Longhorns vs Aggies in prime time Thanksgiving weekend on E$PN. What a joke...

I'm old enough to remember (in the late 1960s to early 1970s) when the vast majority of white SEC fans didn't want their respective football and men's hoops programs to integrate. But those programs did so — in part due to "making money."
It's been like this for a long time. What we are about to see with OU and UT was, realistically, inevitable.

So I guess the next big question is timeline. When do they (UT/OU) make the move into the SEC? Next year? Two years from now?

But the politicians haven't said it's okay, so everyone can just stop.
Also how pathetic does Oklahoma State come off begging Oklahoma to stay since it's clear they have no brand and no one appears interested in their services.
I don't blame A&M for being pissed though.

While I agree with your sentiment, there’s no putting the toothpaste back in the tube unfortunately. I don’t think the Super Conference model that we are headed to is a good idea quite frankly. I am sort of hoping a complete overhaul to be honest, a breakup of the conferences as we know them and re-imaging towards a different, regional divisional structure.

RE: SI Tony Barnhart..Texas & Oklahoma have made up their minds to leave the Big XII
I'm a lifelong fan of the University of Oklahoma. I grew up 30 minutes from the stadium. The first season I remember was 1971, the season of the Game of the Century. I've watched four national championships and even more near misses. I ended up attending a nearby private school, but I am Sooner born and Sooner bred.
I've been watching the SEC almost as long. I watched Paul "Bear" Bryant coach and watched Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson run. I have admired and envied the culture and passion of the SEC for years.
To say I am excited about the possibility of membership of the University of Oklahoma in the SEC is an understatement. My phone was busy yesterday when the news broke, and my work productivity went way down.
I do not celebrate leaving the Big 12 behind. I have friends and acquaintances that are alums or fans of every school in both the Big 12 and SEC, and have visited most of the campuses. I grew up around Oklahoma State fans. I've watched Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State all my life, in both football and basketball. I hope they land on their feet. Likewise, once I moved to Texas after college, I made many friends connected with Texas Tech, TCU, and Baylor. I wish them no ill will.
This is a business decision. I believe it is in the best interests of the University of Oklahoma. I also believe it will be good for the SEC. The SEC will become a mega-conference, a sort of Premier League of college football.
As a fan of Oklahoma, I like this. As an admirer of the SEC, I like this. But as a fan of the sport of college football, I'm wary. I share some of the concerns on this and other threads. But, this is the new world, and the train has left the station. The Big 8 is not around the corner. Neither is the SWC or the 90's Big 12. Those have gone the way of original Astroturf, 1:30 pm kickoffs, leather helmets, poll-and-bowl postseason, and radio-only broadcasts.

That's some great math there by Barnhart.
He's a nice guy, gets things right, but is using Jan 2020 data. And he's a journalist so math skills are not an assumption that can be made.

Is UT/OU in the SEC really that much worse geographically than the Big 12? The SEC has a school in Texas and schools in border states Arkansas and Louisiana. Sure, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are far away but at least they're in the South. West Virginia?
