Of course, he'd probably use some business sense to run the school, and might deign to invest in making up for lack of sufficient investment in athletics for about 60 years as well as rebalancing the school's overall ethos to bring the school back to its former status as a normal American university.

Oh, so you think Carlyle will hire him back? 05-stirthepot

There's no reason why it can't happen. Army's preference has been the flexibility of independence; other than the Commander-in-Chief series, their schedules generally include one or two P5, one or two FCS, and then a smattering of G5 across the eastern half of the US. They were only in a conference from 1998 through 2004 (C-USA). Navy was never in a conference until they joined the American in 2015. Air Force joined the WAC in 1980 and went straight from there to being a founding member of the MWC in 1999.

How likely is it that the Star-Telegram is going to have any serious connections to the PAC? I'm much more inclined to believe this leaked from someone at TCU who, at best, was told "it was close" more for politeness and courtesy than for an accurate representation of the PAC's position. The source could even be a TCU booster who heard from an administrator who lied to keep the booster's pocketbook open. Who sincerely believed a football + basketball-only invite for Houston would even work? I think NCAA rules require that if you play basketball in a conference, you have to also add to the conference everything else that both you and the conference sponsor. You can only get a special membership for sports that your basketball conference doesn't sponsor. Even if that's not accurate, who would take UH as a non-football or basketball member? C-USA? The Summit League? The Southland? The WAC? The American and Sun Belt sure wouldn't, nor would the XII.

The trickiest detail would involve the traditional scheduling of the Army/Navy game the week *after* the conference championship.

The easiest way around that is to put those two in separate divisions and play it as a non-conference game.

Then if both teams win their divisions, then the Army/Navy game winner becomes the conference champion

A couple of schools which may be looking to jump into FBS and existing conferences are North Dakota State (MWC) and James Madison (Sun Belt). Both have had outstanding FCS football programs and seem to be prepared for the move.

A TCU contact seems likely. The column's author, longtime Star-Telegram sports reporter/columnist Mac Engel, has worked at TCU in athletic media relations as well as an adjunct prof in its journalism school. (Bio: http://www.macengel.com/bio.html; LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mac-engel-99b5063/)

BTW, his bio's gallery of photos showing him with various celebrities includes a pic taken from the top of Rice Stadium:

RE: New Realignment Thread
Especially after this week's debacle, the best thing we have going for us is that we have pretty good relationships still with SMU and Tulane... and they are the only ones with 'established' ADs and Presidents in the AAC. Our best hope is that we didn't run off SMU and/or Tulane, and that the others don't push back on their 'seniors' too hard. Of course, the easy question is... if they're a good addition, why did you both leave them before??

Football is all that drives conference realignment. Nothing else. If we aren't pushing on the idea that our fans, small in number though they may be, represent a different and generally wealthier demographic and thus bring in 'different' (or bigger) advertisers.... then we really have nothing.

I don't think that works; TV partners would almost certainly want the Army-Navy game and the Conference Championship to be separate games.

Predictions:

1. At least UAB and Florida Atlantic will leave for the AAC. Maybe UTSA or Charlotte;

2. Zero schools will leave the Sun Belt for C-USA;

3. Marshall will give heavy consideration to leaving C-USA for either the MAC or Sun Belt;

4. C-USA will look to FCS schools to replenish (James Madison, West Florida) but will be turned down.

If this article is to be believed, we are not in contention for the MWC or the AAC.

https://t.co/bBe5sPsjNL

Tulsa, UNT both candidates for the MWC.

Well sir, if true, then our options (in no particular order are):

1) Stay in CUSA;

2) Move to the Sun Belt;

3) Go Independent in football and hope we can put our other sports in either the WAC or Southland; or

4) Drop a division.

None are enviable. And we have no one to blame but ourselves. We knew what had to be done, both on and off the field. And we didn't/couldn't/wouldn't do it. We can't scoff at those other schools now surpassing us who 15-20 years ago, we were regularly beating on the football field, or were at a lower level than us or DIDN'T EVEN HAVE a football team. They put the time, money and energy into building up and improving their programs. Tip of the cap to them. But none of that helps Rice improve its lot. Just depressing. And, given the current state of our big three programs, I don't see much cause for immediate optimism.

Does not make sense. Why would Tulsa go to the MW? The MW has nothing competetivr in any other sport accept football.
