More Owls: Kennesaw State reportedly close to joining Conference USA

Move would get C-USA back to 10 football members, while dropping the ASUN down to four. Kennesaw State would become C-USA's 10th active member, and the 33rd university to hold Conference USA membership in less than 30 years of existence.

Kennesaw State would then become C-USA's 10th active member, and the 33rd university to hold Conference USA membership in less than 30 years of existence.

Kennesaw State is located in Kennesaw, Ga., on the northwest fringe of Metro Atlanta. The school was founded as Kennesaw Junior College in 1966 and now enrolls close to 40,000 undergraduates. Adding Kennesaw State helps re-connect the C-USA map, as the conference would now touch every state from New Mexico to Florida (with the exception of Mississippi), a northern arm in Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

Kennesaw State football launched in 2015 under head coach Brian Bohannon, who remains the Owls' head coach. KSU is 63-19 under Bohannon, with Big South Conference championships in 2017, '18 and '21, FCS quarterfinals trips in 2017 and '18, and FCS second round appearances in 2019 and '21.

As these moves always do, a Kennesaw State departure would have a chain reaction at the FCS level. The Owls have been Olympic sports members of the Atlantic Sun while maintaining football membership in the Big South; however, KSU has joined the ASUN's attempt to launch a football conference.

That effort has been a melancholic success. A long with the WAC, the ASUN keeps losing team to the FBS. Already the two leagues cross-schedule and share an FCS auto bid, with Sam Houston (WAC) and Jacksonville State (ASUN) leaving after this season for C-USA. At present, the ASUN has six football-playing members. And now Kennesaw State could join them after the 2023 season.

The Owls have only fielded a football team for seven seasons, but they have had plenty of success. The Owls have compiled a 57-17 record over the course of those seven years, and have advanced to the FCS playoffs three times. Two of those playoff appearances culminated in runs to the quarterfinals.

The newfound success that Kennesaw State has found is understandable. After all, it is a large university planted in a major metropolitan area.

With over 41,000 students, Kennesaw State is the second-largest school in Georgia. With that comes tons of financial and political ability. Should some conference want to go after a young and upcoming program, it is hard to find a better option than Kennesaw State. Now, it looks like more owls will join the top tier of football progarms, albeit at the G5 level.

Quote:Pete Thamel @PeteThamel

Sources: Kennesaw State has emerged as the favorite to become Conference USA’s tenth member. That addition is expected in the near future for Kennesaw to join effective 2024.

Yup, that was quick: Kennesaw State was approved for membership in Conference USA on Friday, and it will join the league on July 1, 2024

CUSA announcement: C-USA Adds Kennesaw State, Owls to Join in 2024

KSU announcement: Kennesaw State to Join Conference USA in 2024-25

so...more Owls in top division, although some owls might be more equal than others...

Big 12 nears six-year, $2.28B TV extension deal with ESPN, Fox

Quote:The league is in the final stages of putting together a six-year, $2.28 billion contract extension that includes a sizable pay bump for schools. The new contract, which takes hold starting in 2025, includes ESPN owning more than 60 percent of the inventory and Fox adding a sizable portion of college basketball.

The deal projects for the Big 12 to make a sharp increase in media revenue per school, despite Oklahoma and Texas not being in the league after the 2024 season. A source said that the league is expected to agree to a grant of rights with its 12 members for the length of the deal.

The overall value of the Big 12's media deal is expected to increase from $220 million annually to $380 million. That's an average increase in media-only revenue per school from $22 million to $31.7 million (the $380 million is now divided 12 ways with the addition of BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston).

The new deal will mark an uptick in the Big 12's overall distribution number, which currently stands at $42.6 million per school. That number is subject to myriad variables such as NCAA tournament units, bowl revenue and new College Football Playoff revenue.

It's safe to project the overall per-school revenue increasing to nearly $50 million starting in 2025-26. That number could well be much bigger depending on money the 12-team College Football Playoff delivers.

Several years ago, I stated that the proper objectives for Rice athletics should be to become Navy in football and Gonzaga in basketball, and remain Rice in baseball (this was long enough ago that the latter actually meant something). At that time, Gonzaga in basketball was not the same as it is now, but let that remain as an indication of what taking care of one's business can bring.

Rice needs to fix Rice and quit worrying about realignment. Until Rice fixes Rice realignment doesn't matter. Once Rice fixes Rice, many things will be possible. Fix Rice first, then worry about realignment.

The American Athletic Conference football schedule format has been set for the 2023 through 2026 seasons, the conference announced on Wednesday (see Post #1551 just above).

Beginning in 2023, the American Athletic Conference will include 14 football-playing members following the departure of three schools — Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF — and the addition of six schools — Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB, and UTSA.

Each American team will play an eight-game conference schedule and will face the other 13 conference members at least twice during the four-year cycle, once at home and once on the road.

Under the new format, six matchups will be played annually: North Texas-SMU, UAB-Memphis, Rice-UTSA, Charlotte-East Carolina, Florida Atlantic-USF, and Navy-Temple.

Additionally, all 14 American teams will compete in one division as the conference has the past few years. The two teams with the highest winning percentage in conference play will advance to the American Football Championship Game.

“This scheduling model fulfills all of the objectives that we identified as we look forward to competition among our 14 outstanding teams,” said Aresco. “Most important, it is a fair model that has the unanimous support of our athletic directors. It allows for all four-year student-athletes to play at all of our venues at least once during their careers. It reestablishes some longstanding geographic rivalries and provides a foundation for new rivalries to develop. It also provides all of our teams with annual access to the state of Texas and other important recruiting areas.”

Seems odd to have six annual matchups, leaving out Tulsa and Tulane.

Maybe Rice can trade UTSA for Tulane? UTSA can haves ts way with Tulsa every year rather than Rice.

Why do you think it will be a while?

What do you think Tulane’s record was last year?

It was 2-10. Now they’re playing at home for the NYD6 spot, the same spot that next year will be a CFP spot.

This article might answer your question...

A 12-team College Football Playoff in the BCS/CFP eras: Who would have made it?

Let’s go back in time and pretend that the 12-team system was in place at the start of the BCS era, using BCS and CFP rankings from the past 24 seasons as the guide for filling out fields dating back to 1998.

66 schools would have made at least one playoff appearance - Rice is not one of them.

At least there is now a viable way for a G5 team to make the CFP.

Assumptively, the top G5 school will be granted a spot in the future playoff, no matter it's ranking?
