Next six-months will be the most important of JK's career.

Opportunity to be a 'have' or seal Rice's fate as 'have not'

Hope he is working hard behind-the-scenes externally and internally to secure support, $$, etc.

Clarification: The above as opposed to staying put or joining the MWC. I'm 100% IN joining a p5 conference in any way we can. I'd rather be with TCU, Baylor, Tech, K State etc than with the MWC.

Understood. I am just seeing that its difficult to see how we get invited to the Big XII after they backfill with UH/SMU/Tulane, etc. I think that our best prospects are out west and that we would be more appreciated out in the west. First choice, PAC 12, second MWC. But I have been wrong before and will be wrong again. With that said, the Big XII would be a dream scenario as you said, from a travel and revenue standpoint. Even more ideal would have been Rice to the SEC as the western high academic profile school. Along those lines, I was hoping for a Texas/Oklahoma/Rice block to the Pac as I think that 2 out of those 3 fit culturally with the Pac. Throw in Texas Tech and KU or Baylor.

This is not something that ADs make happen, this happens at the president level. And we have a president who has done nothing (worse than nothing, actually) on this score his entire tenure and is now a lame duck to boot.

Hence, some other high profile figure must be his surrogate. The excuse could be Leebron’s lame duck status.

All they need to do is dust off that file that Greenspan left them: "Way, Rice the".

While I am generally not a BIG fan, we should also explore possibilities with the BIG. It may choose to add two schools to get to 16. Most of the schools in the BIG are solid academically, and the BIG has shown with Rutgers and Maryland that the size of the market trumps the quality of the sports teams. We could be the high profile academic school in BIG South, Northwestern in North.

Exactly. I'm as anti-JK as anybody but this is not really something he can do. His job has been to get the athletic department to a position where the President can sell it (if we had one who was interested in doing that selling) to other Presidents.
The Presidents of the member schools (and the respective boards they report to) make all decisions on conference realignment. Not ADs or conference commissioners.

I got a "this page doesn't exist" error from the above link. So I went deeper to find the actual link.

Here's its Twitter text:

TCU insider @JClarkHFB247 has reported that TCU, Baylor, and Texas Tech have already reached out to the PAC-12.

One source told him “The Big 12 is going to blow up man”

As others have mentioned earlier, the PAC folks have never shown any willingness to associate with religious schools. So I find it hard to imagine that they'd invite Baylor or TCU.

True, but if I were Leebron, I would not count on that still being the prevailing climate in the PAC. Their advantage is that they have already invested and competed at a much higher level than Rice. Texas Tech especially has some academic credentials that should not be ignored or looked down upon. Rice should be leading the charge to get the PAC in Houston especially given the amount of ex-Californians moving to the Houston area. Heck, if we are really bold, sell Rice and UH together as travel partners to the PAC similar to USC/UCLA and package Texas Tech. I really think that Rice needs to be extremely proactive. Add Oklahoma State or K State (lots of research) to sweeten the deal. I would say Kansas, but they are probably bound for the Big10.

Agreed. As times have changed, we cannot assume that religious affiliation or lack of academic distinction will be a disqualifier.

We need to go all in on this. There probably is no tomorrow. Someone with influence has to convince Leebron that getting into a P5 with academic peer schools would help his legacy.

I mean, I agree with you on the all-in part: Geography and academics are not going to be enough to make a Rice addition even halfway thinkable for a P5 conference. We'd have to be able to convince them that we are willing to go all in, right now, on seriously upgrading everything about our athletic program (since we obviously can't sell it as it exists currently) -- facilities, marketing, number of sports, etc.

Except we have a president and a BOT who aren't willing to do that. We have *maybe* a few trustees who might be, but nowhere near a critical mass.

And I've posted this before, but I'll say it again: Leebron -- for whatever else might be said about him -- obviously isn't dumb or clueless. He has to know that the benefits of Rice being in a P5 conference would be off the charts. He just also must believe that the price tag of what he'd have to promise in the way of upgrades to actually be seriously considered by a P5 conference is unrealistic.

Now, it's unrealistic because he let it get that way over seventeen years of inaction, but that's water under the bridge now.

I want to be optimistic about Rice improving its athletic position, but I think the odds are against us because of us. As the Roman philosopher Seneca famously said “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity" So, what have we done to prepare for this moment in time to take advantage of the opportunity? I have not seen a plan, much less a vison, from the Rice leadership on where it wants athletics to be in the future. The V2C2 hardly mentions athletics. If the PAC 12 were to call on Leebron or any Rice leader, say next week, to make our case and state our vision and plan for our athletic programs would be prepared to do so? TCU, TT and Baylor can make their case, because they had a plan and implemented that plan. I hope I am wrong, but for my school that is academically in the upper echelons we seem very ill prepared to present our vison and plan for our athletic programs to join a P-5 conference or even a good G-5 one.

RE: New Realignment Thread
Of course Presidents/BoT's are the decision makers but the AD's need to do the work to bring the plan, marshal the internal/external support/$, talking points to sell the vision, work behind-the-scenes, etc. so the Presidents can have the meetings to make it happen. It does not happen w/ Leebron just picking-up the phone as a one-off. JK needs to drive it so his boss can close/sell it. In particular, JK's relationship w/ Leebron, Bowlsby, new Pac-12 (Kliavkoff) other AD's, etc as a lifetime industry insider are key here. If there was ever a time for back room wheeling/dealing, now is the time.

While I have no doubt that TCU, Tech and Baylor have reached out to the Pac-12, they simply do not fit the Pac-12 profile. We are a MUCH better fit for them. Perhaps, they solidify their candidacy if they package us as a Texas-based quartet. (UH would want in, but they certainly don't fit the Pac-12 profile.)
