Rice might even get to join the Big XII, or whatever the remnants of it would be called once UT/UO (and likely OSU/TCU/TT/Baylor/others?) force their way out.

Maybe, but our chances would have been better in a UT dominated BIX after losing say an Oklahoma and a couple others.
With UT out, I think Houston jumps ahead of us on that preference list.

Hopefully having a University President in transition will not cause us to fumble or miss out on any upgrade possibilities.

Agreed on both counts. Rice would only get to join this nouveau Big XII if UH comes with them. And that's most likely if TCU and Baylor leave, creating a need for a private university member.

RE: Texas and Oklahoma reaching out to SEC
I’ll be very surprised if this happens. LHN vs SEC Network? Texas loses that fight. And does anybody think Alabama (and TAMU) would put up with UT’s sense of entitlement? They have enough of that already in the SEC. UT to Pac 12 still makes more sense than the SEC. Splitting OU and OSU would be political suicide for somebody in OK.

Well the splitting of OU and OSU was never going to happens as long as T Boone Pickens was alive. Unfortunately, Mr Pickens passed away in 2019, so who knows?

RE: Texas and Oklahoma reaching out to SEC
You may see the end of Big 12 because of the arrogance of Texas and Oklahoma even though SEC says no to Texas and Oklahoma. Don't be surprise if see the other schools bailing out to other conferences. I am sure the other major would love to have Ok State, W Virginia, Baylor, and possibly TCU. The other schools may be in limbo.

I hear that the UT & OU move to the SEC is a done deal. A&M broke the story in a desperate attempt to block it
but to no avail. The Big 12 is to be officially notified next week.

I'm not hearing that from my SEC sources, but then again those sources told me that Rice to the SEC with Arkansas was a done deal 30 years ago.
Oklahoma State doesn't seem to have as much influence on Oklahoma politics now that T Boone has passed away, but at one time the legislature basically said that OU couldn't go anywhere without taking Okie State with it. I actually think OU and Okie State to the SEC makes a lot of sense and let TexasU fare for itself wherever it can.
I could see Kansas (because of basketball) and TexasU making sense for the B1G.
If TexasU did go to the SEC, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the first conference meeting when TexasU tries to tell Bama and Florida and Georgia how everything has to be done. I don't think their arrogance will play well there.

UF, UGA, Alabama, and Texas have far more that bring them together than tear them apart from an intercollegiate athletics perspective. Generally speaking, their interests are aligned.

RE: Texas and Oklahoma reaching out to SEC
ESPN/Heather DinichMark Schlabach Wrote:The Big 12 athletic directors and their university presidents and chancellors held a videoconference on Thursday evening to discuss the (possible departures of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC). Both OU and Texas were invited to the meeting but declined to participate in the call, sources said.
In a statement provided to ESPN, the Big 12 said, "There is a recognition that institutions may act in their own self-interest, however there is an expectation that members adhere to Conference bylaws and the enforcement of Grant of Rights agreements."
The Big 12 bylaws require any withdrawing member to give the league at least 18 months' notice. There also is a hefty exit fee -- departing schools must pay the league a "commitment buyout fee," which is an amount equal to the sum of distributions that otherwise would be paid to the school during the final two years of its membership. Exiting schools, according to the bylaws, "shall be deemed to have agreed to forfeit all distributions of any type that otherwise would have been made to the withdrawing member during the interim period" between the notice date and the actual departure date.
Last year, the Big 12 distributed about $38 million to each of its members, third most among Power 5 conferences, so Texas and Oklahoma would owe about $76 million each.
OU and Texas also signed a Big 12 grant-of-rights agreement, in which they granted their first- and second-tier media rights for football and men's basketball to the conference through June 30, 2025. That means the Big 12 would still own the schools' media rights for those sports -- even if they are no longer members -- until the agreement expires.
During Thursday's meeting, conference officials also scratched the surface on discussions of what the Big 12 might do if OU and Texas left, and one source said that included looking into whether there were other Power 5 programs that might want to join, or if schools such as UCF, Houston, Cincinnati or BYU might make good additions. ...
... the next step is figuring out the intents of OU and Texas -- and their motivation.
One source said the next 48 hours will be critical to answering that.
"We need answers sooner than later," one source said, "and we don't have any answers right now."
