RE: So...The Tokyo Olympics
Saw Jill talking about how proud the athletes need to be just to make the Olympic team. I’m thinking no. They need to be proud to win and equally ashamed when they lose. I guess when everyone gets a trophy we should expect this.

Mike Friday is the best 7s coach in the world. When I was coaching I copied everything I could from him.

I know the purists hate the 7s game, but my daughters love it. Still can't get them to play, but its something we can watch.

I like 7s as a way to teach. It is a great way to teach skills and basic recognition.

Friday does two things that I really like:

1) He takes American football players and teaches them enough rugby to be very effective because of their inherent athleticism. Perry Baker and Carlin Isles have amazing speed, and particularly in 7s, that makes up for a lot.
2) He uses a triangles concept to organize breakdowns and produce quick ball. Whoever is the ball-carrier is king (we called her queen for women). The closest two teammates fall in behind him/her. Closest one is called rucker, his/her job is when the ball-carrier is tackled, come in over the top and clear out a place for the ball to be transferred. The other is the short runner, Friday called him/her fupi when he coached Kenya (from a Swahili word) and our women enjoyed that terminology. His/her job is to move in ASAP and get the ball moving again. We were a small school and playing the likes of Texas or Texas Tech, I was worried about our lack of depth and getting people hurt in big pile-ups, so we really emphasized quick ball at the breakdowns. We wanted to get the ball out and be moving again before the big beasts arrived.

We took the triangles approach to 15s and actually played 15s like 7s.

Another thing I noticed Friday emphasizes is winning the kickoff after the score. Fuala’au puts it right at 10M for contest.

And he has guys who get there quickly to poach the ball. His whole game is quick, quick, quick. I don't know how much was inherent with him and how much he was forced to adopt it when he coached Kenya, where his players were all small but fast.

As I said, that style fit us pretty well because we were a small school without a lot of depth. We didn't want to get into big pileups because that's where you get people hurt.

We did something similar on defense, where when the ball went to ground instead of piling on, we stayed on our feet and focused on organizing the defensive line and attacking the first pass out of the ruck. First time we did that, against Texas, their fly half was obviously accustomed to having plenty of time to sort things out when she got the ball. My fly half got there as soon as she got the ball and she didn't know what to do. That game was probably the highlight of my coaching career, and became the platform that we built everything that followed on. We went from a startup program that struggled to get enough people to show up to play a match to national sweet-16 appearances, first in 7s and later in 15s. Of course, nothing makes you a better coach than having an all-American player show up.

WATCH: US Swimmers Chant Jill Biden’s Name as First Lady Attends Tokyo Games

Quote:First Lady Jill Biden arrived to cheer on the US swim team on Saturday but ended up getting cheered on herself as the American swimmers clapped and shouted “Dr. Biden! Dr. Biden!” as the swimmers prepared to race.

According to the Associated Press:

Without fans in the 15,000-seat Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Saturday, masked teams had ample room to spread out in socially distanced seats above the deck. The U.S. contingent waved tiny American flags and pounded red-white-and-blue Thunderstix, while the Germans spread their large-sized flag over two rows of seats.

Waiting for the session to begin, the Americans chanted ‘Dr. Biden, Dr. Biden’ and clapped.

None of the usual electricity that typically courses through the Olympic pool was present. Teams shouted the names of their swimmers during the race, when the sound of water splashing was easily heard and music blasted.

Biden also attended a women’s 3-on-3 basketball game with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the day.

Shes the 1st lady, nothing wrong with that. Plus I think most that team went to Stanford, so not surprising.

Vogue says Jill Biden's 'star power' will save 'faltering' Olympic games

Quote:Fashion magazine Vogue says that the "faltering" Tokyo 2020 summer Olympic Games will be saved by First Lady Jill Biden's "star power".

The Daily Wire reports that despite not being an official Federal employee, Jill Biden is leading the delegation to the Olympics.

"While Tokyo will be the first no-spectators Olympics, Dr. Biden will be among the select dignitaries and VIPs in the stands at Olympic Stadium on Friday for the opening ceremonies," writes Vogue.

The Magazine adds that the Olympics could "use a dose" of Jill Biden, after multiple controversies that took place before the games.

According to Vogue, the controversies include "the International Swimming Federation’s exclusionary ban on swim caps for natural hair to a fine levied at the Norwegian women’s beach handball team for wearing shorts instead of bikini briefs."

Vogue also considers the "all-out ban on protests and demonstrations at the Olympics during an ongoing movement for racial and social justice," controversial. This despite the majority of Americans being in favour of such a ban.

The magazine also praised the fact that Jill Biden is a woman, adding that she is a feminist. "It’s worth noting that an all-powerful IOC president reigns over most decisions; there have only been 9 in 125 years, and all have been white men."

Jill Biden was seen wearing a mask during the Olympic Games' opening ceremonies, despite being fully vaccinated, alone, and outdoors.

RE: So...The Tokyo Olympics
I am really sorry about all the controversy.

Japan did such a beautiful job of hosting Rugby World Cup 2019, which was seen as a sort of dry run for the Olympics--including dealing with a typhoon the last week of pool play and the Japanese team knocking off then #2 in the world Ireland and becoming the first ever Asian team to win their pool and make it through to the quarterfinals.

In any event, I don't think Jill Biden is the solution. She's just stroking her own massive ego.

RE: So...The Tokyo Olympics
Chinese government demands NBC correct 'error' of excluding Taiwan from map of China in Olympic broadcast

Quote:China has issued on Saturday a condemnation of an "incomplete map" of the country shown by NBC Universal, claiming the broadcast's omissions of Taiwan and the South China Sea "hurt the dignity and emotions of the Chinese people."

The disputed map in question, which was shown at the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics on Friday, omitted Taiwan and the South China Sea, both of which Chinese authorities feel belong to them.

The Chinese communist government does not control the island of Taiwan, which has operated under self-rule, but has claimed for years that Taiwan is a "rogue province" of China and refuses to have diplomatic relations with any country that recognizes Taiwan's independence. China's authoritarian government has also made disputed territorial claims to the South China Sea, which have been the source of significant near-military conflict over the years with China's neighbors.

According to Reuters, the Chinese consulate in New York posted on Weibo (roughly, the Chinese version of Twitter) on Saturday: "We urge NBC to recognise the serious nature of this problem and take measures to correct the error."

It could be speculated that NBC was trying to appease the Chinese government while not offending others by simply excluding Taiwan from the map entirely.

China has famously tried to pressure the rest of the world to not refer to the country of Taiwan by its name, attempting to get people to refer to it as "Chinese Taipei." Taiwan has its own military, currency, passports, system of government, penal code and transit code and diplomatic relations with many other countries. It even has its own athletes currently participating in the Tokyo Olympics.
